Gold rose to $4,278.02 an ounce today, up 0.72 percent from yesterday and it is worth understanding exactly why.

Tension around the Strait of Hormuz, the route that roughly a fifth of the world's oil passes through, has been in focus as negotiations to partially reopen it progress, and that shifting picture is one factor moving gold this week.

At the same time, markets have trimmed the odds of a Fed rate hike this year, now pricing in just one increase by year end compared with two as recently as last week, after ADP data showed the US economy added only 44,000 private-sector jobs in July, the weakest reading since January.

Gold is still 26.00 percent higher than it was a year ago, and up 4.20 percent over the past month, because both of these forces are genuinely in play at once, pulling the price in different directions depending on the news of the day.
