Great post on labor and price controls, England 13&1400s. I had no idea extensive controls go so far back, and they had state capacity for enforcement. Bad ideas have been around a long time, impervious to experience.

I’ve been lucky with great supervisors/management throughout my career. In rare cases when that wasn’t true, I’ve done what most do: absorb, make the best of it, try to help, look ahead, and see humor in the moment. Scott Adams helped more than a few with that last part. R.I.P.
Investors: JPMorgan says Venezuela has largest oil reserves
JPM: That comes from an OPEC report
OPEC: Our members self-report. Ask Venezuela
Venezuela: We get that from PDVSA
PDVSA: Hugo Chavez told us years ago to report that for prestige & now we'd look bad if we lowered it
OIL BLACK MARKET: Venezuela and Russia are offering large discounts for their oil to entice their regular buyers.
Coupled with Brent trading just above $60, it's resulting in very low outright prices: Russian and Venezuelan crude is being sold just **under $40 a barrel**.
@Anthony_Bonato Used to be (and maybe still is) normal in geometry around sophomore year in high school, but rarely seen elsewhere (I perhaps saw a sketch of completing the square for the quadratic equation, but that’s probably it). Few math teachers seem likely to make it interesting.
I was just doing an interview and was asked: can you challenge our audience with a fun riddle. I called up a paper from years ago and said:
The oldest standing bridge in London (Richmond Bridge), numerous public buildings and other municipality projects throughout the western world, and several wars, including the Nine Years' War, all share a common thread....what is it?
Answer: they were wholly, or partially, funded by tontines.
Years ago I was wandering through our library late one evening and came across an economic history paper on tontines. I became so fascinated I wrote a paper: https://t.co/J19eoICipP
The basic idea: investors pool money, receive dividends, and as members die off, the survivors' shares grow—until the last one standing claims everything. This interesting mixture of group annuity, group life insurance, and lottery has a peculiar place in economic history, and its allure has made it a fantastic plot device for detective story writers. The Wrong Box by Robert Louis Stevenson is a classic example—the 1966 film adaptation boasts a cast including Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Michael Caine, and Ralph Richardson.
CHART OF THE DAY: As promised, here a monthly average oil chart, but this time **inflation-adjusted**.
Arab Light oil, real prices, since 1960 to 2025: it's far to say that from an historical point of view, oil prices are low, even quite low when accounting for US inflation.
