Great post on labor and price controls, England 13&1400s. I had no idea extensive controls go so far back, and they had state capacity for enforcement. Bad ideas have been around a long time, impervious to experience.

OIL BLACK MARKET: Venezuela and Russia are offering large discounts for their oil to entice their regular buyers.

Coupled with Brent trading just above $60, it's resulting in very low outright prices: Russian and Venezuelan crude is being sold just **under $40 a barrel**.

I was just doing an interview and was asked: can you challenge our audience with a fun riddle. I called up a paper from years ago and said:

The oldest standing bridge in London (Richmond Bridge), numerous public buildings and other municipality projects throughout the western world, and several wars, including the Nine Years' War, all share a common thread....what is it?

Answer: they were wholly, or partially, funded by tontines.

The basic idea: investors pool money, receive dividends, and as members die off, the survivors' shares grow—until the last one standing claims everything. This interesting mixture of group annuity, group life insurance, and lottery has a peculiar place in economic history, and its allure has made it a fantastic plot device for detective story writers. The Wrong Box by Robert Louis Stevenson is a classic example—the 1966 film adaptation boasts a cast including Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Michael Caine, and Ralph Richardson.
