Be clear writing performance evaluation criteria. Make sure excellence in one area cannot undermine another. e.g. collaborating effectively should not become evidence of failure to work independently—and good solo work should not count against collaborative dimensions.
I’ve been lucky with great supervisors/management throughout my career. In rare cases when that wasn’t true, I’ve done what most do: absorb, make the best of it, try to help, look ahead, and see humor in the moment. Scott Adams helped more than a few with that last part. R.I.P.
