An Open Letter to the Leaders of the Opposition, Leaders of
Thought, Civil Society, and Nigerians of Good Conscience
There are seasons in the life of every nation when neutrality becomes a form of
consent, and silence becomes an accomplice to decline. Such seasons do not
announce themselves with trumpets. They arrive quietly, until the weight of
suffering makes denial impossible. Nigeria has entered such a season.
We write, therefore, not as men and women seeking favour, nor as advocates of one
party against another, but as citizens who believe that the Republic is greater than
those who have temporary stewardship over its governance. There are principles that
stand above elections, above parties, and above personalities. Among them is this:
no free nation can endure without a strong, principled, and democratic opposition.
This is the Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition.
First, let us speak plainly, for plain truth is the beginning of every remedy. Nigeria
is not working. A nation endowed with abundance has become a nation accustomed
to scarcity. Honest labour no longer guarantees a decent life. Families work harder
yet possess less. The young inherit uncertainty instead of opportunity, while the old
witness promises repeatedly exchanged for disappointment. These are not isolated
misfortunes. They are the common experience of millions.
Many will say our crisis is economic. Others will insist it is political. Both are
correct, yet neither goes far enough. The disease lies deeper than its symptoms. The
true crisis is structural. We have fashioned a political order that too often rewards
loyalty over merit, patronage over service, and power over accountability. We
should not wonder that such a system produces poverty and misery, for a nation
cannot harvest prosperity from institutions that perpetuate poverty and deprivation.
No people have ever repaired their economy while neglecting the condition of their
politics. Governments do not create justice by proclamation, nor prosperity by
rhetoric. They do so by building institutions that answer to the people and not merely
to themselves. Politics is therefore not a diversion from Nigeria's troubles; it is the
ground upon which every lastin
