When Home Becomes a Place of Fear

In Karachi, in places like Maripur, Malir, Lalu Keth, Dalmia, Faqeer Colony, Mawach and Gaddap, Baloch families have lived on this land for generations. Yet for many of them, home no longer feels like a place of safety. It has become a place of fear where the knock on the door in the middle of the night can mean that a father, a brother, a son, a student, or a teacher may never come home again.

Behind every enforced disappearance is a family left waiting. A mother staring at the door until sunrise. A child asking when their father will return. A sister holding on to the hope that the next phone call will finally bring answers. And in the darkness of unknown detention, people are taken away with their eyes covered, while their families are left with nothing but silence.

For the Baloch nation, the fear is not only about losing their homes and land. It is about losing the feeling that they belong, that they are seen as equal citizens with the same rights, dignity, and protection as everyone else.

How long can a people live with the fear of being taken away simply for who they are? How many mothers must wait, how many families must suffer, before their voices are finally heard?

Because behind every enforced disappearance is not a number or a name on a list. There is a human being and a family waiting for them to come home.

What possible crime could an 8 year old girl and a 1.5 year old child have committed? Their only “crime” is being Baloch. Parisa and Zakir have been forcibly disappeared along with Baloch women. The disappearance of children and women by state agencies is collective punishment in its most brutal form.

State secretive agencies operate with impunity, abducting civilians from their homes and denying families even the basic right to know where their loved ones are held. The forced disappearance of minors is a grave violation of human rights and exposes the depth of state oppression against the Baloch people.
