For a long time, my friends and I had been thinking about doing something for our homeland.

It all began with books.

We would sit together, read, discuss, question everything, search for answers, and try to find the truth.

Then, one day, one of our friends secretly managed to get hold of a copy of a book called The White Revolution.

I do not know how many hands that book has passed through since then. I only know that it may have travelled across Iran, from one person to another.

I hope that whoever holds it today reads it carefully and understands its value.

Because to us, it was never simply a book.

It was a window.

A window through which, for the very first time, we caught a glimpse of a part of the truth.

We were young.

Some of us were seventeen or eighteen. Others were twenty, twenty-five, even twenty-eight.

Slowly, we began arranging meetings, gathering together, and spending hours talking about Iran.

We thought.

We planned.

We dreamed.

We dreamed of the day when we could finally do something for our homeland.

Back then, we never imagined that one day the Shah or any voice capable of uniting our nation might call upon the people to rise for the freedom of Iran.

But if that day ever came, we knew that the young people of Iran would be among the first to take to the streets.

We had prepared ourselves for that moment, without ever knowing what fate had in store for us.

We had no idea that we would be betrayed.

We had no idea that some of the people dearest to us would be taken from us forever.

But my friends are still alive.

Not in the streets.

Not beside me.

But in my heart.

They live in every breath I take, in every word I write, and in every dream I still carry for Iran.

That day, we were filled with a kind of excitement I can hardly put into words.

Everyone kept saying,

“Today, we’re going to wear our best clothes.”

And we did.

Everyone had prepared their finest clothes. Some had bought flags. Others had made their own. Some carried signs bearing the words:

“Long live the Shah.”

We had made a simple promise to one another.

That day, we would be one voice.

“Long live the Shah.”

Not because we wanted to silence anyone else.

Not because we believed that other voices had no right to be heard.

We simply wanted, on that day, for all of our voices to become one.

One people.

One voice.

One cry.
