Indian medical system - from preparation to exams to selection to education is not what it was once upon a time.

I am not sure how the current affected The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test [NEET] (medical) students are going to get justice and get over this huge hurdle that is going to heavily impact their future.

But for students looking at studying medicine, I would advice to start preparing much early on, during your school time (11th/12th grades) and get out of India to be within countries/systems that nurtures & awards your merit and nothing else. If you have already completed/cleared NEET, it is an additional perk.

You need a passport, 60% (the more the better) aggregate in science subjects in 12th grade, letters of recommendation (have observational experience/ essays or publications from a clinical medicine/ surgery unit/ hospital visits during high school), get educational transcripts, if you have NEET scores (added point, to apply to USA colleges) and then most importantly, and finally, prepare for:

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) - for USA and Canada (also requires one additional year of Diploma course in science/health subject)

UK Clinical Aptitude Test or the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) - for UK and Singapore (great option)

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Admission Test (UMAT) for Australia (MCAT scores or Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test GAMSAT scores also valid)

And mandatorily clear an English proficiency test (TOEFL/IELTS) with the recommended cut-offs for validity.

Work on these hard, very early on and you will have to only answer with merit and not wait in line for the system to finally acknowledge you with donations/bribes.

If you have an option of learning an additional language in school, make it German, because studying MBBS in Germany is a great option.

Please look into these alternative options rather than dropping many years to get an MBBS seat in India which is not worth it because the subsequent exams also are exhausting and unfairly competitive - for no fault of yours and complete incompetency and utter disregard for students from Government and its regulatory frameworks. The costs of studying in India versus other countries are not going to be much different in the long term, but the outcomes are going to be so much better, when it is out of India.

This is an honest opinion, correct me if there are errors. I only wish the best for students looking to further a career in medicine.
