Have had time to read a book on academic plagiarism in Austrian universities/Catholic faculties by @PaterAlkuin that's been on my backburner – currently ⅔ through – & the standard of accepted English theological scholarship since the 80s is pretty concerning, to say the least!

It was with real sadness that I learned that the monks of the Abbey of La Trappe in Normandy are considering closing down their operation. As the name suggests, this monastery is the mother house of the Trappist Order, a reform of the Cistercian movement and a particularly intense form of Benedictine life, famous for its austerity and silence. I came to know of La Trappe through Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, whom I read with great passion when I was a young man. La Trappe shaped Merton, who in turn opened so much of the spiritual life to me. Founded over nine hundred years ago, La Trappe has survived the Black Death, the Hundred Years' War, the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, and the world wars of the twentieth century. That this venerable monastery cannot find enough vocations to keep it alive is, in my judgment, a sign of the spiritual disaster that has befallen Europe in the last hundred years: an ideological secularism that is rotting the soul of the West. Let's redouble our prayers that the monks of La Trappe might find a way to preserve their great Abbey. It is needed especially now.

A beautiful #AshWednesday story from Msgr. James Shea: "A couple of years ago, I was on a flight on Ash Wednesday, and the stewardess came back to me and knelt down in the aisle where I was sitting, and she began to cry. She said, 'I wasn't able to go to mass today on Ash Wednesday because I'm working morning till night, Father. Would you happen to have any ashes?' I couldn't believe it. I had a little vial of ashes in the overhead compartment up on top, and I'm not like Father Boy Scout, I'm not usually prepared in that way, but I had some ashes, and so I said yes, I do, and I took them down, and I imposed ashes upon her while she knelt there. By the end of the flight, the two other stewardesses, one of the pilots, and more than half of the plane had followed her and had knelt down in the aisle to receive ashes. This is the hope with which we live, and it's latent in people, it only needs to be activated by our witness."
