How are the most respectful and smart Islamic apologists? I wanna diversify my media diet a bit so I can see other prospectives outside of American evangelicals , trad caths and atheists.
"Why are people mean to me when I defend the moral goodness of torturing people for eternity?"
(DBH was pretty mean, but at least he's not justifying, let alone praising eternal conscious torture).
It baffles me that he is still using the “pray with the rosary for a few minutes” point as if this is an actual pragmatic argument. I am giving him the benefit of the doubt, but this is not impressive. Holding on to conditional prayers can be very counterproductive.
I guess “[bodying] Scott Alexander” means claiming Scott’s theory is physically impossible, insisting that anyone whose experience aligns with Scott’s theory is a victim of suggestibility, then quietly deleting the entire argument from your article when it’s shown to be untenable
New atheism was extremely stupid and immoral(in the way it treated religious people) what has replaced it in online philosophy of religion is this weird sub-stack circle jerk which lacks a spine to be genuinely opposed to the harms caused by religious dogmatism
I know this seems like a contradiction, but we need to distinguish *membership* in the group of America-haters from *explicit visible membership* in the group of America haters. The drafters of the council of Florence recognized this...
@Benthamsbulldog When was I mean sharp criticism and occasionally joking at the expense of bad arguments is not mean. I legit have stoped people from being deranged in my comment section and think some of the stuff Nathan said is schizoid. Pointing out him embracing censorship is not mean
None of this is trivial. Catholic ethics is bad and those who ascribe to Catholic ethics ought to be criticized for the errors they make in there videos
@PatrickRilf9dk You shouldn't be an asshole to nice people on the internet for trivial reasons. Now, as it happens, I, someone very critical of Catholicism, will be talking with Joe *tomorrow* and we're very likely to disagree about Catholicism.
@Benthamsbulldog Again I certainly think it’s possible to respectfully disagree across divides I try to do that. However respectfully does not mean you can’t call a spade a spade
You are correct that my tweet is premature and I will delete because I def should give him more time for him to respond. However I don't really care about engaging in this the worship of respectability in the online philosophy of religion space. I have watched his videos and ...
@PatrickRilf9dk Dawg, this is like day four! Can you understand why right after a guy converts and gets a massive deluge of critical commentary from the whole internet they'd want to lay low and not have too much adversarial mudslinging.
@Benthamsbulldog Yeah again I agree he is a nice person I have said many times when I critique him. All I’m saying is as a piece of content his conversation videos are bad and I will continue to point out how he has been engaging online recently. That being censorship and nonsense to Randal raus
they are full of insane lapses in judgment. Guilt tripping about hell and the ultimate conclusion that the Catholic church is right about the gays and hell. I like Joe he is a good guy but he is not my friend I will not baby him in the name of respectability nor should anyone
