@IrishTimes Some colleges only offer 2 or 3 places for certain courses through the PLC (QQI) route. This needs to be highlighted. More places available in areas like business or arts. In an area like psychology or nursing, there’s a lot more competition and it’s often the luck of the draw.
@IrishTimes A very good option once you do your research and understand that, once you achieve the level required, it’s very much a lottery system with a lot less places offered than through the Leaving Cert route. They need to really expand this to make it a better route to college.
@MaiaDunphy I suppose it’s great that there are people out there who want to offer a friendly word of advice and a bit of wisdom. Wouldn’t it be a sad old world if no one offered a bit of encouragement? One piece of advice I would ignore is “If you don’t know it now, you’ll never know it.”
This is beyond belief! I can only imagine the feelings of helplessness and powerlessness to be stuck in this desperate situation. Isn’t it time for the government to act with urgency and end this shoddy treatment of our older people??
We all want our loved ones and ourselves to grow old with dignity and have a say in our own care. But right now, a massive gap in the healthcare system is letting them down.
Imagine being stuck in a hospital bed, ready to leave, but being told you’re being moved to a nursing home even if you and your family strictly say no.
This is happening right now. Older people are being discharged from hospitals into nursing homes against their wishes. Why? Because a decade-long delay in passing government legislation leaves them without proper rights protections.
Instead of passing clear laws, the state is spending millions in taxpayer money on High Court legal battles over the fundamental liberty and consent of vulnerable citizens.
The recently commenced Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act (ADM) says older adults have the right to choose their own care.
But the government still hasn't passed the critical safety rules (called the Protection of Liberty Safeguards) to handle what happens when there is a disagreement.
Because those safety rules don't exist, hospitals are taking families to the High Court just to free up beds. It’s incredibly stressful for families, heartbreaking for the older people involved, and costing taxpayers nearly €1 million a year in legal fees.
It's time for the government to STOP failing older people, pass the safeguards, and respect older people and their families.

Nearly 200 people have died in the past decade while not wearing a seatbelt, new figures obtained by Aontú’s Paul Lawless TD show. Behind every statistic is a grieving family. Ireland must do better on road safety.

Girona rarely pops up on those lists of 'underrated cities to visit' you see constantly, which is odd, the place is obscenely beautiful, and incredibly chilled. I'll take this over Barcelona all day long.
