The mysterious moai statues

The Moai are iconic monolithic statues located on Easter Island (or Rapa Nui), a volcanic island in eastern Polynesia. The Moai were carved from volcanic tuff (solidified ash) by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500.

There are over 900 Moai statues, with nearly half still at Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater formed of tuff. The site served as the main quarry for the Rapa Nui people.

The tallest Moai, called Paro, is almost 10 meters (33 ft) high and weighs 82 tonnes. There’s also an unfinished sculpture that would be approximately 21 meters (69 ft) tall and weigh between 145–165 tonnes if completed.

The statues are believed to represent the living faces of deified ancestors and were positioned to gaze inland across their clan lands.
