Draconian restrictions on university freedom and protest is one hallmark, and a central one at that, of authoritarianism and attacks on an independent judiciary and appropriate separation of powers, along with exploitation of nationalism and demonisation of others, a path to fascism.
Academic freedom is critical to challenging prevailing thinking, wisdom, and power and avoiding this descent.
This is why Universities inevitably become a key battleground. And why they must resist.
All Universities, including in Australia, must ensure that legitimate and lawful freedoms and rights to protest are protected.
The world also needs more interaction between our youth, more collaboration, more friendships and understanding, not less.
