When I was in MAGA, I feared a “They” who were abridging my rights and trying to indoctrinate my kids.

I came to understand after leaving MAGA that the coordinated, multi-decade demonization, dehumanization and vilification of Democrats, liberals, etc., fuel a lot of the rage and fear within MAGA. I am not defending anyone’s ignorance, but anti-Democratic propaganda and agitprop have long been effective, consistent and disciplined.

A 3 time Trump voter told me last night that the past 2 years have “killed him economically” (his words), but he said of course he’s voting Republican up and down the ballot. I asked him why. He said because the Democrats are “evil” (his word). And then he told me I need to wake up to this truth.

Not criticizing Ally for saying this, but it's important to keep in mind that: those in MAGA who discover that Trump has done all of these have been genuinely surprised, because the news and information sources they consume didn't tell them that Trump would do all of these. MAGA is rife with mis- and dis-information -- more so than any other group.

That some Trump voters speak so disapprovingly of him — and, yet, will still vote GOP, or not vote — speaks to how effective longtime anti-Democratic propaganda and agitprop have been. And, yes, there are some Democratic voters who will "vote blue no matter who."

I came to understand after leaving MAGA that there has been a multi-decade, coordinated effort to vilify, demonize and dehumanize Democrats, liberals, progressives and leftists; these efforts have been disciplined and consistent.

It is not Leaving MAGA's approach to debate; this is why we avoid the question of, "why leave MAGA?" But if I had to offer an answer, it would be: because being in MAGA kills off one's empathy. When I left MAGA, I reclaimed my empathy, and became what I call a born-again human being.

For those in MAGA questioning their beliefs, the prospect of being wrong is terrifying, especially considering that MAGA has shaped their worldview and identity for, in many cases, years. I spent an entire year grappling with the liberating, but frightening, awareness that I had allowed myself to believe lies, falsehoods and conspiracy theories, and crafted an entire activist persona buttressed by those lies, falsehoods and conspiracy theories.

Leaving MAGA is a new community for those who leave MAGA; and for those in MAGA who are feeling afraid and confused. If anyone in MAGA is having doubts, we want them to know that they are not alone. We provide the pathway out of MAGA extremism.
