In the summer of 1997, Bill Clinton visited Denmark. We landed on AF-1 in Copenhagen, boarded Marine One for a night time tour of the coast en route to Kronborg Castle, for Shakespeare the “home of Hamlet.” We landed at around midnight and were welcomed with open arms by the queen and her staff.

Beautiful, historic castle. I was put up in the Scottish Military suite. Beautiful room with a fully appointed spread of meats, cheeses, breads, fruit, and a full bar. All served, of course, with fine china and crystal.

After a phone call with my wife, I made sure POTUS was down for the evening and went to bed.

The next morning, the queen had a breakfast spread for Clinton and the staff. Again, first class.

As we headed to the motorcade to leave for an event and the flight home, I was pulled aside by the Danish military aide.

“Buzz, we have a problem. Your staff stole the china and crystal from their rooms. And took other things as well.”

I was stunned and chagrined. I apologized profusely and told him I’d handle it.

I talked with Hillary and the White House chief of staff and told them what had happened.

Born on April 11, 1919, in the rural community of São Luís in Imaruí, Santa Catarina, she grew up as one of nine children in a devout family of German descent. Her parents, farm workers Johann Hermann and Elisabeth Schmöller, raised their children with strong Catholic values, teaching them prayer, hard work, and charity. Albertina embraced this upbringing fully. She was baptized shortly after birth, confirmed as a young child, and made her first Holy Communion in 1928, describing the day as the most beautiful of her life. She developed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a model of purity.

From an early age, Albertina stood out for her piety and kindness. She helped her parents at home and in the fields without complaint, prayed with genuine fervor, and showed compassion toward others, especially the poor. She shared food with needy children and befriended the families of her father's workers. Her good behavior, humility, and faith made her a quiet example to those around her, admired by both peers and adults in the small community.

On June 15, 1931, Albertina's life came to a tragic end. While at home, she was approached by one of her father's employees, a man known as Maneco, who attempted to rape her. The twelve-year-old girl resisted firmly, determined to protect her purity even at great cost. When the attacker realized he could not succeed and feared she would identify him, he stabbed her in the heart with a penknife, killing her. On that same day, local people who knew her proclaimed her a martyr, moved by her Christian witness and heroic stand. A medical examination later confirmed that her resistance had prevented the assault.

Albertina's reputation as a virgin martyr grew quickly in Brazil. Decades later, the Church formally recognized her sanctity. Pope Benedict XVI beatified her on October 20, 2007, in a ceremony at Tubarão Cathedral. Her feast day is celebrated on June 15. Today she is remembered as a model of courage and fidelity, particularly for young people facing moral challenges.
