Fuel poverty could affect over seven million people in the U.K. this year given sky-high gas prices. Impacts on health, education and welfare for countless families and their children, with repercussions that will be felt for years. A short thread (1/10)
@i_Arturo Arthur - always find your posts and thoughts on en primeur releases insightful. Thank you.
Separately, I cannot fathom why people don’t drink more Sauternes (or Vin de Constance for that matter), but I’m happy to buy more if they don’t want it! It’s a steal for the quality.
@elonmusk This works only if there is no cost to the stopping of the tram. If there is a cost, you’d want to know it was worth it, otherwise it’s just a pause at your expense.
@chriswinedoctor Thanks Chris - excellent review. I was lucky enough to try the 2016 Latour at a dinner at Berry’s a few months ago. It is remarkable but such a long way from reaching its best. Good things come to those that wait!
@fergustp@London_FCA@Politax3 That appears to be in effect a closely-held REIT. Whats the justification for conferring that status? Most people pay 45% tax on distributions from companies that have already paid corporation tax (if the distribution is in the £m).
@London_FCA@Politax3 I had understood that the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster pay no capital gains or corporation tax under a special tax status. The King and Prince William do pay 45% income tax on money received from the Duchy estates, but that’s separate.
@pberard I had a terrific dinner with the wonderful Pierre Lurton in March. 2001 is his favourite modern vintage of Yquem. Fortunately I have a case of 12 half bottles waiting for me! Glad you enjoyed.
@premnsikka@OwenJones84 CGT at same level as income tax makes some sense, but only if there is an indexation allowance, so it’s only a real terms tax. Otherwise investors could be taxed on nominal profit and so lose money on long-term investment. Why would you invest in the U.K. if so?
Charges for trades and dividend reinvestment take a smaller and smaller toll as the portfolio gets bigger as well. £/$100k means, say 10 stocks at average of £/$10,000; fixed trading / platform costs on those size of stakes start to become less meaningful than on smaller holdings.
@TheSecretAcct Divorce, illness, unemployment, changes of circumstance; many reasons why someone once comfortably off and able to afford more than 2 children starts to struggle. Should the child face poverty as a result?
