The thing I keep telling people is that it really doesn’t matter WHO pays the tariffs, because at the end of the day, the products and materials are more expensive.

Let’s pretend for 5 seconds that tariffs are paid by the exporting company, not the one importing it. Ok. If they were previously charging $10 for the item, and they get a 60% tax ($6), then the product now has to be increased by at least $6 to make the same profit and cover the tax. The consumer ends up paying it one way or the other unless an alternative is found in a country without the tax or tariff.

What people THINK is going to happen is that we will simply stop buying Chinese goods as an alternative, and buy American.

Except we currently have no infrastructure in place to achieve this. It was all dismantled and converted to process the goods we bring in from elsewhere. So American goods will not simply have the added cost of the raw materials, but the higher wages of the American company AND the costs of infrastructure to make that even possible. Costs will skyrocket to use American goods and raw materials. And, it may take years to even build the necessary facilities. Unless the government seized the methods of production and forced the workers to make things at whatever wage they want at whatever speed they want. Or nothing at all. Which is a whole other kettle of fish.
