Frustrated by inaction on the growing danger of cars on their street, in the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic.
They inadvertently invented the woonerf (living street): a common space for play and socialization; especially for kids.
@CompletedStreet The NIMBYs in this dense urban neighborhood, including local developers who maintain portfolios of blighted properties, would prefer that it remains underdeveloped.
Good read for anybody concerned about the Chestnut Hill West line always being too close to the chopping block. Getting the station-area population up to the citywide average through more housing construction would result in a lot more ridership
Sorry but I can't get past @bcgp advocating against trolleys on a street that is already completely unbikeable. We need modern infrastructure that allows light rail and cycling to safely co-exist. Even if you paved over every track on the Avenue no one would dare to bike on it.

@civic_grit The residents are right. @PennDOTNews is overbuilding this for a future mythical traffic volume. It should be a single lane roundabout with protected bike lanes.
In 2020, 40% of motor traffic in Vilnius' city center was passing through with no intention of stoppingβup to 70% on specific streets during the morning peak. In order to keep the social and economic heart of the city pumping, the city introduced a new traffic circulation plan.π§΅
A haphazard visualization of a way to return Fairmount Park's eastern riverbank to a beloved park.
In short: make Kelly Drive 1 direction each way, add parking along the edge, create a dedicated bike trail, add frequent pedestrian crossings, and tame intersections.
@civic_grit There's a book about the early history of the Fairmount Park Guard, and the amount of auto-related incidents that occurred back then is shocking.
