@JosephShea @CityofPG Love your “Dutch level of design” compliment. Yes, footpaths and bike paths should be given massive priority. In NL we now have “cars are guest” roads, meaning the roads are owned by pedestrians and bikers, and cars need to drive at 10 km/h and behave as guests. Brilliant.
A report released by @icimod describes vast changes in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region: glaciers are retreating more quickly, snowfall days are dwindling, and permafrost is melting.
These will have key impacts on states, societies, and biodiversity.

At 3C of warming — what the world is roughly on track for under current #climate policies — glaciers in the Eastern #Himalaya, which includes #Nepal and #Bhutan, will lose up to 75% of their ice. At 4C of warming, that ticks up to 80%.

ICIMOD’s latest report, Water, Ice, Society, and Ecosystems in the #HinduKushHimalaya, is published today.
Building on the 2019 Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) assessment report, this major new study provides the most accurate assessment of #snow, ice, and #permafrost to date.
The peer-reviewed study warns of grave consequences to the region, which provides #freshwater services to a quarter of the world's population and is home to four global #biodiversity hotspots.
Key findings:
🔹Himalayan #glaciers disappeared 65% faster in the 2010s than in previous decade
🔹The glaciers could lose up to 80% of their current volume by end of this century
🔹Availability of #water in the Hindu Kush Himalaya is expected to peak in mid-century then decline
🔹#Floods and #landslides are projected to increase over the coming decades
🔹Effects of the changing #cryosphere on fragile #mountain habitats are particularly acute

13/ In particular in High Mountain Asia, all studies acknowledge a colossal gap: the lack of observations.
Ice thickness is notoriously difficult and costly to measure, and measuring campaigns in High Mountain Asia should be a priority!
