@White_Janissary LBJ is the closest we have. Rural origins, strong work ethic and desire to rule, many serious health problems that were largely self-inflicted. He would starve and then binge, gaining 10-20 pounds in a month or two. After the presidency he smoked himself to death.

@JustDeficient New vs old conservatism is another distinction. Voicing your support for low taxes, small government, and the military won’t raise eyebrows. Wearing a MAGA hat and drinking from a “liberal tears” mug will (justifiably) earn you disdain on campus. It’s not comparable.

@JustDeficient The whole thing is dumb. There are plenty of profs with conservative politics. I met plenty in college. They are a minority, but present. Their views are not popular, but they are free to voice them, especially if tenured. What conservatives demand is popularity.

@lonelyspeck I’m with you. I may or may not actually like the plot or pacing or other elements of the film, but seeing the attention to detail and research process is fun in its own right. Like seeing a painting with a boring subject but superb brushwork.

His rate was $4/hr when he retired in the 80s, about $16/hr today. And he did way more scope of work. Drew blue prints, complete plumb-ins, electrical, everything.

@SxLongshadow @madison_tayt Here’s my worry about a lot of the trades: They charge extortionate prices. I got a quote for a plumber to repair a toilet. $350. I watched a YouTube video, bought a $6 repair kit on Amazon, and did it myself. How long is that sustainable? I think prices have to eventually fall.

@rwlesq @JasonKPargin Wrong. His argument was that many of these jobs are developed to respond to market demands which are not aligned with real humans needs. A factory worker producing garbage plastic knickknacks also has a BS job. Arguably most AI sector, crypto, and many tech jobs are BS too.
