Think of Private Equity (PE) like that one rich, business-savvy uncle who sees a brilliant but struggling family business and decides to step in

Let’s use Alaba Market or Computer Village as an example.

Imagine a brilliant guy named Chidi who imports electronics. His business is doing well, but he is stranded. He wants to stop renting shops and build a massive, multi-story warehouse to supply the whole of West Africa.

He needs ₦500 million. Bank interest rates will strip him naked, and he’s not on the stock market for regular people to buy shares.

Here comes the Private Equity Firm

The PE firm approaches Chidi. They don't just lend him money; they buy a huge piece of his business. They become partners.

They inject that ₦500 million. But they also bring structure. They hire auditor experts, set up proper corporate governance, stop the cash-only leakages, and build that massive warehouse.

Five years later, Chidi’s business is no longer just a shop, it’s a structured logistics giant. The PE firm sells their stake to an international tech giant or lists it on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) for way more than they invested.

Private equity isn't just money, it's more about smart money. They look for local champions, give them the heavy financial muscle and structure they lack, blow the business up, and then cash out

This is exactly how companies like Interswitch or Paystack got the heavy backing to become the giants they are today before the rest of the world noticed them
