@JCamp_5@BenMichelCRE @KidBeely This concept is in Kansas and Missouri as well. We actually had a course get bought by a company doing this, and the city turned down the plan to put in the apartment complexes... Closed down one of the best courses in the area to build single-family homes instead.
@jmillspatrick@chrisxmunn Easily. Where I live in Kansas the only new home builds are like $500k+. So many people my age have to buy older smaller homes (which is what I did).
Foundation shifts, burst pipes, and a failing retaining wall have all cost people I know $10k-$15k in a single repair.
@Fire5280@chrisxmunn But most people don't invest that way. And a forced savings vehicle (similar to how some people use their tax returns) ends up helping most non-financially savvy people more. Which is why owning a home is typically a good idea long-term for most people.
@Fire5280@chrisxmunn I think in general the math works out that you need to live in your house ~8-12 years (depending on inflation and repairs and blah blah) before it would end up better than renting assuming you would put the down payment and repair cost savings into the market.
@chrisxmunn@tylerguitar_ I'd be curious what kind of debt Mr. Huber came out of Cornell with. I wonder if his parents owned any kind of business.
It isn't unacceptable, but I think it is funny to see people jock ride a guy who was seemingly born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
@loyal2theroyal@Budgetdog_ Lol then who paid for your school?
I had credits from HS. I went to JUCO one year (for free). I won $17k of scholarships. I went to an in-state public college. I lived at home one of those years. I worked part-time the ENTIRE time I was in school.
$33k in debt when I graduated.
@SrHousing_CRE@NiklausFuller Employers love having the leverage. You have a family, so you can't lose your job no matter how much you hate it. So you show up.
You're 55+ and have enough cash to retire if not for healthcare costs. Sorry, you're stuck until Medicare kicks in at 65.
A real shame.
@NiklausFuller I think this, but about how many people age 55+ would retire if not for the insanely expensive private health insurance market. So many people not able to go live their last good years because they have to have a job just for insurance purposes.
A shame.
@NiklausFuller @NPalms1 I know two people who owned businesses who just didn't get health insurance. One ended up getting cancer and can't afford the treatment. The other's kid got in an accident that paralyzed them.
Both businesses will/have go(ne) under because of health insurance. It's a problem.
@UncommonYield Meh. This isn't really a great article.
If there was a study about the divorce rate for couples to have a joint account or something that'd be interesting. But this is just a silly little blog post.
@blakemayf@M_Vernon I don't get how this is such a difficult concept to grasp for so many people.
If you can't fill the stadium at 47k, making it smaller makes sense.
It is well past time for the BOD to remove John Melo as CEO of $AMRS. His latest spending spree has put the company in a liquidity crisis that is worse than it has ever been since I invested 6 years ago.
