The Marion County, Indiana District Attorney’s office is charging Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington with felony assault for her flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham.

“The play transcends sports,” said DA Jon Raebro.

“Once she made the decision to cause physical harm on purpose, she committed a crime.”

Prosecutors say Carrington may have only faced a misdemeanor if she hadn’t shown obvious malice aforethought.

“She tried to injure another person. That can’t go unpunished.”

Sophie Cunningham refused to back down on protecting women’s sports — and now the player who targeted her is facing real charges.

The WNBA has made its final decision: DiJonai Carrington will be suspended without pay for the remainder of the season for her flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham.

“This went beyond the game,” said League Commissioner Jan O’Berro. “Carrington willfully tried to cause physical harm to another player. That’s unacceptable.”

Carrington’s response? She’s claiming she’s being persecuted for being black.

The league just made it clear that intentional violence on the court has real consequences — race card or not.
