🇳🇱 BREAKING: Former member of the Christian Democratic Party, @PieterOmtzigt, announced he founded his own political party called ‘New Social Contract’.

Here’s why it could bring about a major shift in Dutch politics. 👇🏻

Pieter Omtzigt was a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), but left in 2021 and continued as an independent politician since. Omtzigt rose to prominence for his role in uncovering the ‘childcare benefits scandal’, which is arguably one of the most shocking examples of a governmental violation of the rule of law in recent Dutch political history.

In a nutshell, the Dutch tax authorities wrongly accused an estimated 26,000 parents of making fraudulent benefit claims, requiring them to pay back the allowances they had received in their entirety. In many cases, this sum amounted to tens of thousands of euros, driving families into severe debt and financial hardship.

As a result, victims lived their lives in a bureaucratic nightmare that was impossible to escape. Some of the victims killed themselves out of pure desperation and over 1150 kids were unlawfully removed from their parents’ care by child protective services. Some of them still have not been returned to their parents to this day.

By exposing the governments wrongdoings, Omtzigt played a big role in the fall of the Rutte’s 3rd cabinet in 2021. Of course, Omtzigt did not exactly make himself popular with the establishment for doing so, but made himself incredibly popular with the people. In the 2021 general election, he was re-elected winning 342,472 preference votes. The heavy attacks from the establishment Omtzigt wore on him though and forced him to take time off, suffering from exhaustion.

After the election in 2021, a former minister was photographed holding confidential notes stating: "position Omtzigt, function elsewhere". In other words, people in the executive branch were trying to get rid of a democratically elected legislator who had exposed their corruption.

For the past two years, everyone has been anxiously waiting to see if Omtzigt would start his own party and now he finally has. Although ideologically speaking he’s not “my guy” (he’s too moderate for my liking) Omtzigt is a politician who has fought the establishment bravely, almost entirely by himself.

He’s popular with the people and someone who has proven to be a man of integrity who could bring much needed reform to the corrupt system in The Netherlands.

The big question remaining is whether his party will be willing to cooperate with more hardline conservative and/or right wing parties that have systematically been excluded from government rule for the past decade.

If the answer is no, all his talk about reforming the system and giving a voice to the people won’t be worth much. It remains to be seen how he’ll position himself. However, I respect him for his continued efforts in exposing how incredibly corrupt Mark Rutte’s governments have been over the past decade and I believe he genuinely wants to see political reform.
