VIDEO | Mumbai: NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar says, "... After the protest, we came to know that around 1,500 to 1,800 FIRs have been registered against students in Mumbai alone. Many of them are just 15, 16 or 17 years old. Some are employed in MNCs, some are preparing for job interviews, some are applying for passports to study abroad, while others are pursuing higher education or preparing for examinations. If these FIRs remain on record, they could face serious difficulties in obtaining police verification and character certificates, affecting their education and careers..."

He adds, "That is why we appealed to the DGP to withdraw these FIRs. This was not a political protest; it was a social movement for the welfare of students."

I had a 20 minute conversation on the phone with Mr Sivakumar today and felt so utterly helpless at the end of it. He broke down in tears many times. From placing his daughter’s body in the morgue to the response of the police, from cremation grounds to cops, he spoke of hostile red tape and open corruption.
