Today, Tamil people in Canada and across the world mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day

In May 2009, the state of Sri Lanka orchestrated a heightened program of genocide - targeting no-fire zones and hospitals and denying food and medicine to people in #Mullivaikkal.

Today, we honour the countless innocent lives lost in the #TamilGenocide and reaffirm our commitment to ensure that history never repeats itself. We must never remain silent, we must continue to share their stories.

Today, we mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, commemorating 16 years since the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka in which the government committed a mass genocide against the Tamil people. Many survivors fled and escaped to Canada for safety.

We remember the lives lost, the families shattered and the communities forever impacted. We stand with Brampton and Canada’s Tamil community, who continue to carry the weight of this pain and the memory of loved ones.

This year holds special significance as Brampton is now home to the Tamil Genocide Memorial Monument – a powerful symbol of remembrance. The monument stands as a reminder of the past and a call to action for a future built on truth, accountability and peace. We hope for a day when the Rajapaksa regime’s war criminals are finally held accountable for their crimes against humanity.

The Rajapaksas' opposition to the Tamil Genocide Memorial is the surest signal that we are on the right path recognizing the innocent civilian lives lost at the hand of this family.

If confident no genocide occurred, the Rajapaksa family should fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court rather than obstructing justice and hiding from prosecution. This is their Nuremberg moment and instead of facing accountability, this family hides in luxury protected by the Sri Lankan state. It’s shameful.

The crimes against humanity committed by the Rajapaksa family rival Pol Pot, Slobodan Milosevic, Heinrich Himmler, and Flicien Kabuga. It’s a badge of honor that they object to our Canadian Tamil Genocide Memorial.

I am pleased the Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed the appeal made by Tamil genocide deniers against Bill 104, Tamil Genocide Education Week, Act. This is a major victory for the Tamil people in Canada and across the world and a key step towards healing and education for future generations.

I am grateful to Premier Doug Ford, my legislative colleagues, over 60 Tamil organizations, community members, and especially the Tamil youth whose tireless efforts helped defend Bill 104. The Supreme Court of Canada’s historic decision recognizes the innocent lives lost and serves as a milestone in the global movement for justice for the Tamil genocide.

Court of Appeal for Ontario upholds Bill 104, Tamil Genocide Education Week Act

Today, on September 5th, 2024, I am pleased that the Court of Appeal for Ontario has upheld Bill 104, Tamil Genocide Education Week, Act. The constitutional challenge made by Tamil genocide deniers has been dismissed, allowing Ontarians to continue to educate, learn and raise awareness about the Tamil genocide.

I am grateful to over 60 Tamil organizations, community members and especially Tamil youth for working tirelessly to defend Bill 104. The passing of Bill 104 was a historic moment for Tamil people in Ontario and across the world.

We will not be intimidated by the foreign interference in local affairs by the genocidal Sri Lankan government.

There will be no real reconciliation until the government hands over the war criminals responsible for the tamil genocide to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Sadly the government continues to harbor these war criminals in luxury instead of holding them accountable for their crimes against humanity.

In Sri Lanka, the government can try to stop the Tamil community from remembering their loved ones and heroes, but they cannot do that in Canada. It is an act of foreign interference that they attempt to obstruct memorial and remembrance events in Canada.

I hope the government of Canada will take a hard line against the ongoing foreign interference of the Sri Lankan government.

Proud to mark the beginning of the construction of the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton.

Thank you to @ncctonline, the Brampton Tamil Association and the Brampton Tamil Seniors Association for this beautiful initiative to remember the over 100,000 victims of the Tamil genocide. Children were murdered, women raped and villages plundered with mass graves by the Sri Lankan regime. We do not forget these innocent lives butchered by a genocidal government.

The Tamil journey to Canada is part of our national story. It was the government of Brian Mulroney which opened up our doors to Tamils fleeing the atrocities of the Sri Lankan regime. It was the government of Stephen Harper who took a principled stand and boycotted the common wealth meeting in Sri Lanka. It was the Ford government in Ontario who added the Tamil genocide to the school curriculum. It was the government of Justin Trudeau who recognized Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day and sanctioned Sri Lanka war criminals with travel bans and asset freezes.

There is much work to do for justice and reconciliation but Canada continues to stand tall in the fight against the barbaric Sri Lankan regime which continues to evade accountability at the International Criminal Court.

💫 Eelam Tamil rights activist wins Korean human rights prize

The 2024 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights by the South Korean May 18 Memorial Foundation has been awarded to Tamil women's rights activist Suganthini Mathiyamuthan Thangaras.

Suganthini, who is the head of the organization "Amara", has been fighting for the rights and empowerment of war-affected women in Tamil Eelam against the repression and suffering caused by the Sri Lankan government and its security forces.

She is a survivor of sexual violence and of the 2009 Mullivaikkal genocide.

Today, May 18th we mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. We honour the memory of our loved ones, the innocent lives lost and bear witness to their stories and resilience.

Since its independence, the state of Sri Lanka has been on a path towards genocide. The Sri Lankan state began systematically disenfranchising the Tamil population - initiating a series of events that would ultimately lead to the genocide of the Tamil people.

May 2009 is marked as the height of the Tamil genocide. The Sri Lankan state engaged in a heighted program of genocide with cluster bombings, abductions, rape, murders, and denial of food and medicine to Tamils in Mullivaikkal.

While we cannot bring back the lives lost, together, we can reaffirm our commitment to educate the next generation about the suffering, and bring justice and freedom to Tamil people.
