Throughout the ages the Tamil people in the island of Sri-Lanka lived as a distinct nation. Since 1948, Tamil people are going through genocide by Sri Lanka.
🚨 Canadian mayor calls for release of Tamil rapper as international pressure grows
The mayor of Brampton, @patrickbrownont, has called for the immediate release of Tamil rapper Sangeethsan Ganeskumar, known professionally as Hiphop Sangee, who has been imprisonmed since his arrest under Sri Lanka's Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
In a statement posted on X, Brown described the arrest of the 24-year-old as a "flagrant violation of free speech" and criticised the Sri Lankan government's continued use of the PTA against the musician.
"Criminalizing an artist for expressing his identity and sharing music is a flagrant violation of free speech," he said.
@patrickbrownont Thank you for raising this issue. Acts of Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka directly affects the Tamil Canadians. All levels of governments in Canada have shown tremendous support to Tamil Canadians.
Deeply concerned by the arrest of 24-year-old Tamil hip hop artist Sangeethsan Ganeskumar (known as Hiphop Sangee) in Sri Lanka under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). Criminalizing an artist for expressing his identity and sharing music is a flagrant violation of free speech.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental pillar of any democracy. Yet, consecutive Sri Lankan governments have repeatedly promised the international community they would repeal the PTA, only to break those promises and continue weaponizing it to silence dissent.
Since the height of the Tamil genocide in 2009, Tamils still live under intense military surveillance and systemic oppression. Acts like this are a painful reminder of why projects like the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton are so vital. It is essential for community healing, remembrance, and raising global awareness about the ongoing plight of Tamils.
I call for the immediate release of Sangeethsan Ganeskumar and join global human rights organizations in demanding the total abolishment of the PTA. @ncctonline@AnitaAnandMP@gary_srp@TheThanigasalam@LoganKanapathi@NeethanShan

Social justice activist Rev. Fr. M. Honoured to receive the Founding Partner Award and Leadership in Health Certificate from President Mohamed Lachemi for my role with TMU Medical School.
Proud of Brampton’s MedTech Task Force and its work advancing health innovation 👏🏽
We should be proud when leaders with lived experience stand for justice, not question their loyalty. Let’s call this what it is: a dangerous double standard. This is what we face every day in our workplace and now it's been shown to the Minister.
As a Tamil Canadian, I’m deeply disturbed by the framing of this article. It subtly implies that Minister Anandasangaree’s Tamil identity and past human rights work make him unfit to oversee national security — that’s not scrutiny, that’s coded racism.
