Tamil Nadu govt replaces former CM M K Stalin’s breakfast scheme for Chennai sanitary workers with a daily cash allowance based system.

Under the new arrangement, 24,264 workers, including GCC staff and those employed through Urbaser & Ramky Enviro Engineers, will get Rs 50 for each working day, credited monthly with their salary.

Rs 44.28 crore has been allocated for the scheme. A GO was issued by MAWS secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi.

The decision follows complaints over poor food quality, delayed delivery and hygiene issues. GCC said 92% of workers consulted across all 15 zones preferred cash over food.

The govt has cancelled the existing contractor’s three-year contract, which began on Nov 15, 2025.

The breakfast scheme was launched by then CM M K Stalin last year amid protests by sanitary workers. Rooms were also built across the city for workers to sit and eat.

The cash allowance was earlier announced by school education minister Rajmohan after meeting sanitary workers protesting at Ripon Buildings.

TVK ministers are scheduled to meet sanitary workers again on Oct 3.

Udhayanidhi’s latest round of double meaning, crass remarks doesn’t even surprise anyone anymore.

Vijay has already shattered the political script that once seemed to have Udhayanidhi’s path to the CM chair written out for him. Now, every time the pressure mounts on the DMK, instead of answering the political questions, he seems to fall back on cheap personal jibes and filthy innuendo.

If this is how he chooses to channel his frustration, it only exposes how far the political discourse has fallen.
