PBS Origins just documented something important: Virginia Indigenous people were historically pushed from “Indian” into “Free Negro” and later “Colored” classifications through law and recordkeeping.

That matters. “Negro/Colored” in historical records cannot automatically be treated as proof of exclusively other origins . Some Indigenous populations were administratively absorbed into the same historical population that would later be called Soulaan.

So when we trace our historical population backward, some of the people later recorded within it were already here.

That history matters when discussing the population ancestry of Soulaan today. 🇺🇸
