The #Cowboys make another addition, this time agreeing to terms FA S Jalen Thompson, formerly of the #AZCardinals, per me and @SlaterNFL.
He gets a 3-year, $36M max deal done by Don Weatherell and Martin Fischman of @KlutchSports.
A few notes on the Rashan Gary trade:
- The Cowboys opted for financial control with an edge rusher instead of bidding with others as FA prices go up.
- This fits what they want to do schematically very well
- Dallas is leaning into Christian Parker as an evaluator as Parker and Gary were together in Green Bay.
- The plan is to quickly fix the defense enough to allow a top tier offense to go to work.
- They're not done making moves.
The Cowboys are working to hire Christian Parker as their defensive coordinator, sources tell me and @RapSheet.
Just 34 years old, Parker spent the past two seasons as passing game coordinator/DBs coach under Vic Fangio with the Eagles. Now gets his first DC job in the NFC East.
Breaking: Mike Tomlin has informed the Steelers that he is stepping down as the team's head coach, sources tell @AdamSchefter and @JFowlerESPN.
Tomlin coached the Steelers for 19 years.
Why do it now vs a post June 1st cut.
A few things.
They can evaluate their roster ahead of the draft and next season.
This gives Trevon Diggs a shot to potentially find a team looking for an extra piece for the postseason.
Here is the money breakdown:
He will count as $8.5M dead cap money in 2026. The Cowboys will now owe him zero dollars cash in 2026.
A post June 1 cut would only have saved $4.25M cap money in 2026.
In other words, beneficial to Cowboys financially moving forward and a clean break for a player who wasn’t going to be here in Dallas and they want to help him find a new home that’s a better and perhaps even a postseason run.
My understanding is Diggs’ release was not a result of a specific incident. It was the culmination of multiple factors spread over time, including both performance and other elements. The team felt it was best for both Trevon and the Cowboys to move on at this point.
