A study showed that high flavanol cocoa preserves vascular endothelial function during two hours of sitting in young men, independent of their fitness level.
A recent study showed two hours of sitting impaired vascular function and blood flow in both fit and unfit young men. High-polyphenol cocoa intake rescued arterial endothelial function in both upper and lower limbs during prolonged sitting.
Two hours of sitting significantly reduced flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in the superficial femoral (legs) and brachial (arms) arteries by 1-1.1% and 0.6-0.7% in highly fit and less fit men, respectively. This represents a relative reduction of approximately 25% and 12% in FMD, indicating decreased endothelial responsiveness and increased resistance to blood flow.
A low-flavanol cocoa intervention resulted in a drop in FMD after two hours of sitting for both groups, high-flavanol cocoa intake before sitting prevented this decline in FMD in both highly fit and less fit participants.
It's important to note that high-flavanol cocoa did not significantly protect against increases in blood pressure, shear rate, decreases in blood flow to limbs, or reductions in tissue and muscle oxygenation. It did effectively prevented the drop in flow-mediated dilation.
This suggests that cocoa flavanols have the potential to preserve arterial endothelial responsiveness during extended periods of sitting. This could lead to faster recovery of blood flow pressure following prolonged sitting, although the study did not investigate how these markers recovered after movement was resumed.
The take home message here:
