Someone in the BJP needs to lose sleep about what's happening within the party. We cannot afford to lose a young talent like Shehzad Poonawalla and pretend everything is normal. If anything, this should serve as the jolt the party needs.

It also raises a larger question. What is the career path for young leaders who have spent years defending the party on television? After they've been there and done that, what's next?

The party needs someone to think like an HR head. Talent cannot be managed on autopilot. It needs a clear growth path. Otherwise, capable people will begin looking elsewhere.

The political marketplace today is far more competitive than it was a decade ago. Good talent has options.

जापान की लेखिका सायका मुराता का उपन्यास पढ़ रहा था ‘कन्वेनिएंस स्टोर विमेन’। जब इस उपन्यास का अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद आया तो इसकी धूम मच गई। लाखों प्रतियाँ बिकीं। कहानी कुछ नहीं है। यह कन्वेनिएंस स्टोर में काम करने वाली एक लड़की की कहानी है। उसका जीवन पूरी तरह से कन्वेनिएंस स्टोर के अनुसार ढल चुका है, मैकेनिकल हो चुका है। वह जीवन में उसके अलावा कुछ और नहीं सोचती। सोना-जागना सब उसी के अनुसार। समाज में उसको असामान्य, अनुपयोगी समझा जाता है। उपन्यास में उसी की तरह नाकाम समझा जाने वाला एक लड़का है शिराहा, जो कहता रहता है कि पाषाण युग से लेकर आज तक समाज में कुछ नहीं बदला। पाषाण युग में पुरुष शिकार पर जाते थे और स्त्रियां घर में रहतीं, फल फूल चुनती और पुरुष के लिए भोजन का इंतज़ाम करतीं। वह कहता है, पाषाण युग के जमाने से ही स्त्रियाँ ऐसी ही रही हैं। सबसे युवा, सबसे सुंदर लड़कियों सबसे मज़बूत शिकारी से शादी करती थीं। यही होता आया है, जबकि मेरे जैसे बाक़ी लड़कों को ऐसी लड़कियों से ही काम चलाना पड़ता है जो बची हुई होती हैं। हमारा तथाकथित आधुनिक समाज महज़ भ्रम है। हम जिस दुनिया में जी रहे हैं इसमें प्राक् ऐतिहासिक काल से कुछ भी नहीं बदला है। हम लैंगिक समानता की बातें तो करते हैं, लेकिन वास्तव में सब पूँजी का खेल है।
उपन्यास मैकेनिकल, डिजिटल होते जाते समाज की कहानी है। हम मशीनों के बीच जीते जीते मशीन हो चुके हैं, हमारी संवेदनाएँ मर चुकी हैं। हम जीते जागते रोबोट बन चुके हैं और हमें इसका इल्म भी नहीं है। कहानी देखने में बहुत साधारण लगती है लेकिन एक असाधारण सच का सामान करवाने वाली है।
लेखिका सायका मुराता के बारे में कहा यह जानना दिलचस्प है कि इस उपन्यास को लिखने से पहले उन्होंने भी एक कन्वेनिएंस स्टोर में काम किया और उस जीवन को समझने का प्रयास किया जो इंसान के भीतर प्रेम, सेक्स सभी तरह की कामनाओं को ख़त्म कर देता है। सारी आकांक्षाओं को नष्ट कर देता है।
अंत तक आते आते डर लगने लगता है।
मौक़ा मिले तो पढ़ियेगा। उपन्यास फ़िलहाल अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद में उपलब्ध है। हिंदी में भी जल्दी आने वाला है।
