Nick Candy and Holly Valance. Britain’s most expensive house. A £265m sale.
Usual consequence: £32m of stamp duty.
But five small flats were included in the sale. By an extraordinary happy accident, that cut the tax by £18.5m.
The curious sale of Nick Candy’s mansion
A 🧵:
🚨 🇨🇦 Canada, thousands of miles across the Atlantic, is being invited to become the EU’s first associate member, while Brexit Britain, just 20 miles from France, clings to its red lines and begs Brussels for exemptions.
Canada 🇨🇦 understands what Britain’s political establishment still refuses to admit: in a world of American coercion, Chinese scale and Russian aggression, sovereignty is strengthened through cooperation with like-minded democracies, not isolation.
Canada 🇨🇦 is moving towards the European table.
Britain 🇬🇧 needs to reclaim its seat.
@WileyWindyMoor1@dave43law Actually seawater is slightly heavier than freshwater, and weighs about 1.025kg / litre, which is a good reason to drive more engagement on your link 😉
"1 in 4 chance of ‘catastrophic’ water supply failure for 1m Britons."
Yep, according to the govt's national risk register there is now 25% chance of a massive failure "resulting in the loss of piped drinking water and impact to wastewater services for over one million people”, adding that "residents would likely have to leave the area, and some may require evacuation. It is likely that repair of the infrastructure could take months".
You have been warned.

So another cracking Cottrell story by @venetiamenzies & the Insight team. Bravo.
I’m also fascinated by the stake-out pix. ST is throwing PROPER money at this. Looks like photographers stationed at known Cottrell locations.
What do the Murdochologists make of this? @davidyelland? @davidfolkenflik? @arusbridger?
Polite request to @BBCPolitics. Is this fair? To allow people I’ve been investigating like Banks & Phillips, below, a platform to slag me off on air? Without revealing she worked for Cambridge Analytica - who I exposed. Or asking her anything about it?
To every trans Londoner: this city is yours too.
Today we celebrate London Trans+ Pride and reaffirm a simple truth: you should be free to live as yourself, without fear or prejudice.
You are loved. You are wanted. You belong here.
Today was the last day of term at one of our local schools, and after I did the end of term assembly, one of the teachers asked if I could stick around and meet a class to answer some questions.
I had an hour free, so I did.
I make no secret of the fact that I found Anne Widdecombe’s views abhorrent, nor will I deny that I believe Reform UK incites division and hostility. But did she deserve to have every woman’s worst nightmare happen to her? No. She did not.
The key takeaway is this: you don’t stop male violence by encouraging more hatred and division. Once you normalise that, society itself begins to unravel. There was already an epidemic of male violence long before politicians started fanning the flames for political gain.
The leaders of Reform and Restore create unease and unrest because they profit from it. They point fingers. They deflect. They exploit despair and anger. Time and again, they have manipulated some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in Britain. In doing so, they have contributed to an environment in which women, gay people, trans people and people of colour face greater hostility and, potentially, greater risk of violence.
Does that mean I think Anne Widdecombe was to blame for what happened to her? Again, no. No woman deserves to be brutally murdered by a man. It is one of the oldest, deepest fears carried by women, and tragically, it is not an irrational one.
I’ve received unspeakable threats despite not being a politician, simply for talking about politics. The police do nothing. The police are yet another institution women are forced to fear. Women are not safe anywhere, not even in our own home. I’ve lived alone. I know how vulnerable you can feel, simply because you’ve dared to have a voice as a woman. I’ve lain awake in bed wondering whether the noise downstairs was a man, radicalised by social media, fuelled by misogyny, entitlement and rage, finally acting on one of those threats. Anne would have likely done that countless times.
The price women pay simply for existing is fear, the price they pay for having a voice or agency is even higher.
While I found many of Anne’s views, particularly those regarding other women, abhorrent, that does not mean she asked for this. Men who inflict horrific violence on women rarely need an excuse. The fact that they can is often reason enough. Male violence is not limited to one culture, a political viewpoint, a particular religion or one race. It is endemic. No woman should have to die to prove this point but many more will unless action is taken.
Do I think Reform and Restore should be defenestrated? Absolutely. But at the ballot box. Because we’re not fucking animals. And because the working class should have more respect for itself than to let a handful of old Etonian pricks decide who we are.
The best revenge is to recognise who your real enemies are, then quietly leave them to their riches, their private jets and their mansions. The more irrelevant they become and the less divided we are, the less power they hold and the less money they make.
Two things are true:
No woman deserves what Anne Widdecombe endured.
The likelihood of women enduring male violence has markedly increased because of the hateful, violent and divisive rhetoric of figures like Farage or Lowe.
Reject them. They’re not on your side.
BREAKING: Landmark two-year Dutch review of trans healthcare finds ZERO regret among transitioners. Netherland’s Medical Council warns making trans people go through puberties they do not want is NOT a neutral option.
Meanwhile, the ridiculous UK sticks with the non-peer reviewed Cass Report. Are you going to do something @YvetteCooperMP ? 50 dead and counting. Great report @ErinInTheMorn ✅ . Link below. @jamesmurray_ldn@wesstreeting
🚨@andyburnham is expected to take Thames Water into Special Administration today
Bad news for those who have taken £12 billion out of the company in dividends. Wonderful news for ordinary households!
Anything less than permanent public ownership as a next step would be a grave betrayal
"Watchdog accused of ‘giving away’ billions of litres of spring water to foreign bottling giants."
Yep the EA are up to their old tricks again. The EA are charging Coca-Cola £6,070 a year to abstract water from the north of England which Coca-Cola then sells for £30 million.
Did I mention that according to the EA by 2050 in England we will need to find another 5 billion litres of water per day just to keep our taps running and to try and save our chalk streams.
What a hoax of a regulator.

Can’t say it loudly enough because it is the truth - the ultimate defence. All of the entities on the list published by Amnesty last week were launched SPECIFICALLY to persecute or ban trans people. Every single one. Without exception.
Take that motive away, none would exist.
The Edinburgh Funder is trying to bully people into silence. @amnesty@AmnestyUK
@1goodtern My wife who is covid-cautious is currently recovering from a bout of LFT-confirmed covid which she caught a couple of weeks ago, having avoided it for the last three years. Heavy fatigue and loss of taste. It's definitely circulating.
Currently Dan Hodges is being reported to the police by Reform supporters for harrassment of Farage for actually reporting fctually as a journalist.
On a deeply concerning level Isabel Oakeshott also a journalist has shared the post stating that they are doing this......
Here the truth is pointed out about unelected Yusuf
This is a big deal.
A research scientist at Google DeepMind has broken cover & is calling out Google’s leadership on a deal it’s signed with the US govt that could see its AI used for military & surveillance purposes.
Kudos. So rare to see this. 👊
With trans hate now protected and enshrined in UK law - 30s Germany levels - Britain is a scary place at the moment.
The anti-trans people movement has unlimited funds - and can even intimidate @AmnestyUK into taking down factual content.
What are you going to do @andyburnham@UKLabour@Lord_Collins ? Do you hear any of these alarm bells?
Rights and protections stripped. Legal recognition gone. A genocide warning on us.
