Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.

The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

Respectfully, Pastor—Black people aren’t killed because we fail to submit. Time and again, we’ve watched our people comply and still lose their lives. Framing the issue this way risks placing responsibility on the oppressed rather than confronting the systems that harm us.

At a time when our history is being erased, our jobs are being lost, and our civil rights—especially voting rights—are under attack, it’s critical that Black faith leaders speak with clarity and care.

Even in addressing submission to authority, we must be accurate: when an officer uses unreasonable force, he is violating his authority. And when there is little to no accountability for those actions, the injustice multiplies. That’s why we can’t afford to mix words. Our people deserve truth, protection, and justice.

Let’s also remember—Jesus was unjustly executed by the state. Not because He failed to submit, but because those in power feared His truth and His influence. That same dynamic plays out today when systems react violently to those they cannot control.
