Data on suicide among air traffic controllers show that in 2024, controllers were 8x more likely to die by suicide than the national average, with 12 deaths reported, according to information obtained through a FOIA.

“You can tell @FAA_Bryan to contact us,” a controller wrote. “We have a list of growing suicides. Since he’s so blissfully ignorant.”

For context, @CBP had 10-15 suicides of employees a year under Biden. It had 65,000 employees. Leadership deemed it a crisis and hired a suicidologist and overhauled its approach to the workforce and wellness.

@FAANews has 11,000 controllers and the same number of suicides per year. So it’s 6x the crisis that the CBP crisis was. People are dying, needlessly.

Half a dozen air traffic controllers across the country have invited me to visit their towers and see what they do since my interview with @FAA_Bryan, so here’s where that stands.

The ATCs told me they have visitors on occasion and visitors just have to clear a background check. I asked FAA for a tour, as media. I want to see how @FAANews is spending $12.5B from Congress to enhance operations. I also offered to do it not as media, willing to lock up my phone and do it off record. FAA said no.

This is 🤯 .... Air traffic controllers are working “10-hour shifts six days a week.” Riley said they can be left with little time outside work other than recovering before returning for another shift.

FAA says controllers could spend more time in those shifts on duty, but then says mandatory overtime reached levels between fiscal 2023—2025 that ��far exceed any reasonable use” and warned that chronic overtime contributes to fatigue, burnout, and ultimately the loss of controllers.

Yet FAA says controllers are not being productive enough to earn the same raise other government employees received. It's no wonder ATCs are aggravated.

NATCA had a national town hall this afternoon that air traffic controller sources tell @SamanthaJoRoth and I that NATCA President Nick Daniels said my statement in the below tweet (that the union didn’t respond to requests for comment on member concerns) is “bullshit.” We diligently sought comment so we don’t know why Mr. Daniels would state this.

We have not received any comment on the record, on background, or even off the record from NATCA since reaching out several times since last Thursday.
