So let’s have this absolutely right: a couple of losers chop down a sycamore tree so beloved by the Instagram generation and get MORE THAN FOUR YEARS - but developers fell trees illegally across the country essentially without sanction. We’re more screwed than we thought.
‘You can’t build any more houses, it’ll pollute the nature reserve’
‘Have a wedge of cash, we’ll call it nutrient credits so it sounds green’
‘Oh, go right ahead then’
@SavillsRuralUK why are you cutting trees this time of year please? Yes Ash die back but covered in Ivy & birds use this heavily. One of many you are felling on Church land. @KentWildlife.
#Turtledove to be shot for sport again across Western Europe as EU lifts hunting ban
This will undoubtedly have a detrimental impact on the future survival of the species despite a recent recovery.
Like & share if you think the ban should be permanent! https://t.co/AKpFqbCJxN
BIG NEWS!!!! it is official, there will be a GCSE in Natural History. Feel quite overwhelmed. Maybe these little ones and all other wildlife might have a better future.

On behalf of newts and bats we shall fight them in the countryside , we shall fight them in the ponds and marshes , we shall fight in the belfry’s , we shall fight them in the caves . We will never surrender our wildlife . . .
(Channeling my inner @JonathanPieNews !)
Almost 1m homes in England are empty. Vacant properties have increased by 32% since 2016. We have a higher ratio of bedrooms to population than ever before. Simply building more won't fix the #housingcrisis.
"The number of long-term empty homes has risen across Kent, with enough to house the county’s homeless families three times over. There are a total of 8,452 homes "
Probably true for most countries too! @emptyhomes

@MurrayOrchard Thanks Murray. May 2016 if memory serves correctly. After all the westerlies and last week’s storm there has been talk that the IOS bird could be the subspecies ‘aranea’ (ie USA/Caribbean) but that is above my pay grade!🙂
Yesterday has to be up there with one of my best UK day’s birding with self finds of a Gull-billed Tern in Porthcressa Bay and a Pec. Sandpiper on the Great Pool !Tresco.
Both seen at long distance hence the great (not) quality digiscope shots.
Despite this year’s House Martin success on my estate it is depressing to be informed by a neighbour that they witnessed their’s hosing down a nest. It’s possibly occurring on other houses as well. Obviously an offence under the W&C Act 1981 but getting proof😬
@ukhousemartins
Lots of messages on social media this year of “ where are all the hirundines?” However on my estate in East Malling, Kent pleased to report a record number (28) of active nests. (14 pairs last yr and 23 pairs in 2022).
@KentishPlover @ukhousemartins
@RSPBDungeness Is there a RSPB public statement re why the option of constructing viewing (or disturbance) points was taken?
The decision to forsake Firth Hide, which used to provided 5⭐️ views of waders/gulls/terns/scarce & rares has bewildered mainstream Kent birders!
@MurrayOrchard @Sofabirdermoi @BarryWright12 @plodingbirder@LeyshonOwen@amjlip Firth hide - numerous rare/scarce records over the yrs in summer/autumn (was 5⭐️site on Burrowe’s). Sadly little now due to people disturbance.
Xmas Dell hide, provides shelter on trail but v poor ornithologically. Should this be moved?
New MPeace hide relocated. Correct place?
@dbbirding@AndrewRLawson1@LeyshonOwen Used to really enjoy my vol days at @RSPBDungeness. From day 1 there, (many years ago) told to keep visitors off the banks!
The installation of the viewing points was an unmitigated disaster. That’s why no longer vol. there. Farcical now!
@SteveRoutledge8@SwarovskiOptik Considering the level of Swaro users in the country now, time to provide a repair and service centre here in the UK rather than shipping back to Austria?
