Congratulations to the newly minted Dr @PyneEd who passed his PhD viva with minor corrections yesterday ๐๐ช look out for some cool papers on fungal combative interactions coming soon. Thanks to examiners @AberMycol and @Ellie__Jameson and chair @PrysorWilliams
The deadline to apply for our Undergraduate Student Vacation Bursaries is coming soon. Awards of up to ยฃ3,300 enable students to gain valuable practical experience in any area of fungal biology research.

@AguilarT_CA@uniofjyvaskyla@jyuscience A. mellea, so pathogenic. A. gallica is quite different. Are you working with Armillaria network ecology currently? It was the focus early in my PhD before switching to focus on biocontrol so very happy to chat rhizomorphs sometime
@DrHyfe Vasaline has worked for me when storing cultures or colonised woodblockss in plastic storage containers. Careful subculturing under a dissection microscope and immediately autclaving the doner plates has also saved important culture collections from experiments in the past.
I have a PhD opening in the lab to look at improving detection speed of viruses and bacteria in freshwater with sample processing and nanopore https://t.co/ogR7NaDA1i

A comprehensive study on secondary metabolite biodiversity of the largest organism on Earth was just published by @angew_chem, involving @MS_Fungi and BIOTEC. Congrats to all coauthors and many thanks for funding from @MSCActions
@McdonaldMeganc@BS_PP I've used blended and strained organic carrots to make a media for Armillaria before, I can send recipes. I use 2% MEA as the standard for saprotrophs and some tree pathogens do well on that as well
@ImperfectFunGuy Looking for a post-doc? I have been working on Armillaria biocontrol using saprotrophic cord forming basidiomycetes and looking for my next steps
@FungiwithBengi Geoffrey kibby has excellent keys for the UK species, might be helpful but you may need DNA to be confident, EF-1 alpha is the gene to barcode for best resolution not ITS :)
@JeremyDBarrell Good use of veteranisation techniques to aid risk management, shameless plug, please see me recent publication on veteranisation of oak branches

Looking forward to presenting some updates on how RNA and DNA viromics can be used to understand how we influence viral communities both around us, and within us ๐๏ธ๐๐ฉ
Interested in the effects of veteranisation on fungal communities? Check out our paper published in the @ArbAssociation journal.
We found communities in veteranised oak branches differed to natural dead branch communities @FungusProf@ECGilmartin

The "tree surgery" was finally on today ๐คฉ We started the last experimet of the @FutureOak_ project, testing the effect of microbial SynComs in oak saplings! Happy to have the best team all along @jamesemcdonald@Usman_Hussain_S@PyneEd@marine_cambon @cenococcum
I am very happy that the pre-print of our work is out, showing that chemical elicitors from a beetle larvae triggers proliferation and virulence of a plant bacterial pathogen. See the thread below and check out the paper to learn more: https://t.co/7QVFktqTMZ
