Ripe aecia of #Puccinia graminis found in the #barberry hedge near my house, as every year — could this be a promising sign for the 2024 survey week starting tomorrow around #Dijon, #Burgundy? 🤗
Time for close look at some lichens again 🔎

Ectomycorrhizal trees are different and it matters for soil organic matter! We show these mutualisms are not functionally homogenous, with implications for the generalizability of coarse mycorrhizal associations in understanding forest ecosystem function.

Just read this really nice overview of research on fungal fairy rings by Zotti et al.

Mnohem větší radost než první letošní smrže mně včera udělalo teprve druhé setkání v životě s jednou z našich nejkrásnějších hub vůbec – krasočíškou žlutou (Caloscypha fulgens s. l.) 😍

Fungi form the very foundation of healthy ecosystems but threats such as #deforestation and agricultural expansion are driving a global decline.
Over 1,000 of the world’s 155,000 known fungal #species have now been assessed the @IUCNRedList.

On this #InternationalDayofForests I share my #sciart that showcases the amazing habitats made by one thing: trees working together. Here's my illustration of the earliest known fossil forest, the 380 million year old Gilboa forest, preserved as a fossil forest floor:
#InternationalForestsDay and what would forests be without fungi?? My closeup view of the Hartig net (yellow) , the miraculous sandwich created when fungal threads in soil snake intimately between plant cells in roots, sharing food, water, and minerals at the new interface

What’s “so special” about this fungus? 😅 Mycena chusqueophila is a clear example of the close and specific relationships that fungi maintain with the organisms around them. Which species bring you joy when you find them in the forest?

Nice to find ,Orbilia vinosa, growing on a dead willow branch in Midger wood on Sunday day , in my Monograph of Orbiliomycetes it says only five previous records for this species in the UK, nice to see an Orbiliomycete other than Orbilia Xanthostigma for a change.
