See what happens to soil viruses when you set their habitat on fire! #FEMS2025
Super excited to be presenting my work on DNA/ RNA viruses and how they respond to wildfire.
Talk is 13:00 on Thursday, Brown 1&2
Massive thanks to @FEMSmicro for supporting my attendance!
Abstracts are due Oct. 19 for the 2025 New Lineages of Life Symposium — 80 slots available!
See speakers below.

Stoked to have Luke Hillary joining us to talk about adapting MIUViG for RNA viruses—huge step for making sense of uncultivated RNA viromes!😍
#RdRpSummit2025 in 3 days!
We're looking for suggestions on how to update and adapt the Minimum Information about an Uncultured Viral Genome (MIUVIG) reporting standard. What works? What needs updating? Check out the survey https://t.co/JfgxdICuRG 🧵
...host associated, aquatic, terrestrial, etc etc) Once we've collated all the responses and people who are interested in contributing/ want to stay updated, we'll reach out again. Also happy to answer questions here but am mainly on BlueSky.
Now published! Super divergent RNA virus lineages identified in Australian soils and some initial insights into the fascinating relationship between soil properties and virome composition. Check it out 👇

#VoM_UK24 was a great conference. Really nice to catch up with people and share some of the work on viruses and wildfire I'm doing @ucdavis. The standard of talks from PDRAs and PhDs was phenomenal. Huge thanks to @DarrenSmithdx and the organising team for putting it all together
Last day to register an abstract for a talk all you phagesters! We will try to make sure as many PGRs, Postdocs and Fellows get the opportunity to talk about their research. Its a very supportive audience!! Abstract deadline is today 8th Jan, registration closes on the 15th.
Looking forward to presenting some updates on how RNA and DNA viromics can be used to understand how we influence viral communities both around us, and within us 🏞️🚜💩
Come see my #soilviruses and space (spatial distances not outer space) #AGU23 talk at 9:30 on Friday! Yea yea yea the last day of conferences are tough, but my session is full of super cool microbial talks and even cooler people 😎. Session B51A lead by @elbrodie starting at 8:30
@SieraVirus@Jane_Fudyma That should work nicely. Watch the pH of your lysis buffer as you can lose RNA if it drifts too low. Also helps to preheat the lysis buffer too. @jamesemcdonald taught me everything I know for that protocol 😁
@Jane_Fudyma@SieraVirus All prep PowerFecal is a PowerSoil/ PowerFecal DNA kit where you purify the RNA from the flow through of the DNA column. Yields are slightly lower than a pure DNA or RNA extraction and you're limited to 250mg input. Griffiths is cheaper but processing needed to separate DNA/ RNA.
