TERATA returns to a project Mario began in 2015, when he harvested over half a million stray images from the Internet Archive's book-digitisation process, everything its text recognition couldn't read: illustrations, photographs, diagrams, decorative ornaments. Digital beachcombing, in his words. Picking up what the tide of digitisation washed aside.

Searching that archive for spirals years later, he found a dense cluster of shell engravings from nineteenth-century natural history books. He'd never been especially interested in shells, which he takes as a reason to look longer.

@Merzmensch Yeah, it was the dark ages before free cloud GPUs and step-by-step YouTube tutorials. One could probably generate an entire short film today in the time it took me to get a single image on my old underpowered machine.
