My Experience with the RTO: Today vs. 8 Years Ago

It was 1996 when the Tamil movie Indian was released. It focused heavily on the deep-rooted corruption within RTO (Regional Transport Office) offices in Tamil Nadu. The movie was supposed to sound the alarm and raise public awareness to help reduce corruption. Instead, bribery became more normalized than ever before. For the past 30 years, it felt like only middlemen could walk into an RTO and actually get anything done.

In 2018, when we moved back to India from the US, I had a naive mindset and a strong will not to pay bribes. I had purchased a used tractor for agricultural use. Despite having all the proper paperwork, I had to make at least a dozen trips to the RTO office, spending several months waiting before I finally succeeded. I made it my mission to persist and win. I did eventually succeed in registering the vehicle, but it came at a heavy cost to my time and emotional well-being. At the end of the grueling process, the assistant to the RTO laughed as he signed the papers and asked me to at least buy a flag for ₹50.

Since then, I evolved into a "normal" Tamilian because survival comes first. Bribes had simply become a normalized part of life.

Even after the 2026 election results and @TVKVijayHQ public stance against bribery, I still didn't voluntarily choose to go to the RTO office myself this time.

However, I went today because a middleman told me, "Sir, please go yourself, as middlemen are no longer encouraged inside the offices." To my surprise, I walked in alone with the paperwork from my dealership. The entire process took two and a half hours. All of the staff members were courteous, except for the brake inspector. He reminded me of the movie Indian—he easily could have worn me down, but I persisted, driven by the hope given to us by our CM, @TVKVijayHQ sir.

What gave me real hope, though, was the RTO officer himself. As he signed the papers, he explicitly told us, "You will be given a username and password to pay online. Please do not pay any money to anyone else." I never imagined I would hear those words inside an RTO office in my lifetime.

Today, I got the work done with absolutely zero bribes. A huge thanks to Thiru. Vijay Avl and the people for electing him as our CM.

I will write a separate post soon detailing where process reforms are still required based on my experience. Many British-era rules still exist; changing them will reduce corruption to an even greater extent.

When I first arrived in Chennai from Jharkhand, I was anxious about finding safe and affordable accommodation as a working woman. Paying guest options were expensive, so I tried Thozhi, the Tamil Nadu government’s hostel for working women.

I was initially sceptical, expecting a rundown facility, but I found clean, well maintained rooms with facilities comparable to private accommodations.

Four months later, it has been one of my best decisions. A spacious double sharing AC room costs just ₹10,620 per month with no extra electricity charges. Meals are affordable, breakfast ₹40, lunch ₹50, dinner ₹40 and each floor has a washing machine.

The hostel offers accessible facilities for differently abled women, including ramps, lifts, and special rooms, plus a creche where trained caretakers look after children up to five years old while mothers work.

Evenings are lively as we share stories with women from diverse professions and states across India. It feels empowering, safe, and inclusive.

Thozhi hostels are green buildings with solar power and water conservation, and there are now 25 of them across 21 districts.

Affordable, thoughtful accommodation like this truly makes a difference for women moving cities for work.

Are you a recent graduate in India, who can't find a job-- then listen:-

1) Structured jobs are gone (mostly!). You have better odds of career success, if you think of yourself as a 1 person company.

2) Think about where you can add "value" as a 1 person company.

Value= help someone save time, earn money, reduce effort.

3) Start with the simplest thing you can do. For eg. if you have no job:

Start learning video editing. Almost anyone can learn this.

Get skilled at 1 skill. Spend 1000 hours on improving it: you will have a clear idea whether this skill is for you or not.

4) Then spend 100 days: building a client acquisition strategy. Just answer 1 simple question-- how are you helping your potential client?

Give specific examples
Your strategy
Your results

Post about it on Twitter, Linkedin etc.

5) You will get a lot of hate for doing #4. Do not worry.

What you're doing is 100X better than begging for reservations, spreading hate, spreading corruption, schooling people on nationalism.

You're actually doing something useful and productive in your life.

Keep your head down. Keep working.

6) If you can move abroad, amazing for you! Do it in a heartbeat.

With each passing day, this move will get harder and harder.

Most importantly understand: that no one owes you anything. If you work hard (& with focus), you can change your life. You hold the power.
