The Reading Mother- by Strickland Gillilan

“I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.

I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.

I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.

I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings--
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be--
I had a Mother who read to me.”

@GoldenDomesPod @LoveTheeNDIrish Fully intend to visit Sound Bend next year to see the campus. Feel like it’s something that has to be seen in person.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@BYU4eva Taking down ND is a tall order, may not be probable but very possible, especially a home.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@98_lovelace ND fans have every right to be confident. You’ve got a great team. But upsets of this nature happen all the time in CFB. It’s what makes the sport so much fun. BYU has plenty of reason for hope. Gonna be a great game.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@AlwaysIrishINC Reasonable people know that. It was a let down for us, but ND and BYU were similarly mistreated last year. Felt some kinship at the time

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@GoldenDomesPod @Cougarlvr12 @LoveTheeNDIrish The game this week, especially a home and home starting at BYU smooths over a lot. Less concerned about bowl game last year, and more about not honoring previous commitments. Really want to like ND, but refusing to come to BYU when scheduled was a bad look.

@thestustustudio Great quote from “If” and very aptly applied.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@WSJ Misleading headline. This is why I canceled the WSJ.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@DavisCountyUte Difficult to compare given vastly different in game leadership philosophy. For good or ill, Kalani won’t go for the jugular given the opportunity, Scalley will. Only a BYU loss would provide room for meaningful comparison.

@iiTzz_Tyrell Depends on the season of life. This weekend lucky enough for every session live.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@TolkienWorldG Hollywood learned all the wrong lessons from the superb adaptation of Gollum in the movies. He’s a great only in contrast to Frodo. I’d rather see “The Rise of Aragorn” covering the years after he left Rivendell up to the Prancing Pony meeting. Ending with the Hunt for Gollum.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@HumbleFlow Good to be hopeful, but they weren't fighting themselves. Self hatred is the largest issue.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@TolkienWorldG This scene works so much better if the movies had Elrond approve of the match only if Aragorn could become king. Finally fulfilling the quest and requirement he spent 6 years pursuing. It’s still good in the movie, but Tolkien wrote it better.

@SquishyHunter @HilarityjaneArt Yes. CS Lewis world building is quite small. Tolkien thought the same thing. That doesn't diminish it's value in anyway, in some ways it gets useless details out of the way of a strong moral narrative. I love Narnia and would strongly recommend it all.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@crgallinger @HilarityjaneArt There is certainly room for debate. But compared to Wheel of Time, Silmarilion, etc Naria books are quite short and they intertwine only loosely. They're among my very favorites and should be read in every home.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@anotherfish759 Definitely best part of the book. Very poignant and unfortunately applicable today.

[Quickening Quotes @QuickeningQuote]

@JohnCleese Well said. Incidentally the John Cleese reading of Screwtape Letters is by far my favorite.
