Whether the cash comes from deep-pocketed tech VCs betting on a global women’s and men's sports platform or through indirect Middle Eastern investment funds, the suspicion is smart financial intuition based on the sheer, unprecedented amount of money being burned before a single game is played.

No matter how much they try to distance themselves now, the league had a formal, confirmed partnership with Sela, a global events company owned entirely by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). When the league first launched, co-founder Grady Burnett openly admitted to reporters that Sela was their official event partner. Even if they try to minimize it today by calling them a "vendor," having a primary operations contract with a sovereign wealth fund's subsidiary is a major, undeniable tie to Saudi Arabia.

This is a classic corporate PR pivot: they are using the fact that the partnership is currently dead to pretend it was never alive.
