🇬🇧 Congratulations, Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Before your first speech about a war that ended in the Middle East, some business at home to address:

• Nine months ago, on Yom Kippur, a terrorist attacked Jews at prayer in Manchester. Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz never came home from synagogue. You were the mayor. That city was yours to protect.

• This week, as incoming prime minister, you gave one of your first interviews to Gary Lineker, who left the BBC after sharing a post depicting the Jewish state with a rat. Jews have been drawn as rats before. Our grandparents can tell you what came next.

• When Lineker called Israel’s war a genocide, and challenged Israel’s right to exist, you said nothing. Every Jew in Britain heard that silence.

• A Jewish child on the Tube knows by age eight to zip a jacket over the school uniform. Every Jewish school in your country sits behind guards and gates. No other British children go to school like that.

• Families who have been British for two hundred years now ask, quietly, over Shabbat dinner, whether their grandchildren should grow up somewhere else. Nobody calls the question paranoid anymore.

None of this is beyond repair. Visit the synagogue in Manchester. Meet the families of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz. Say plainly that what Lineker shared was a disgrace.

British Jews are not asking for much. They are asking whether the prime minister works for them, too.

JEW-HATRED IS REAL

Last week we were sitting at a lunch restaurant down by the harbour in Skagen. High season, thirty degrees, full tables, children and draft beer and fried plaice - Denmark at its most Danish.

A young couple sat down at the table next to us. Mid-twenties, from a mid-sized Danish town, he a tradesman, she friendly and well-spoken.

We fell into conversation, the way you do while waiting for the food - where are you from, what do you do - and the conversation drifted, as conversations do these days, onto the culture war, which he in particular was preoccupied with. Islam, Christianity, the EU, political life.

A completely ordinary conversation between completely ordinary Danes over lunch.

And then he says it. Calmly, out of the blue, as if he were remarking on the weather:

"If you ask me, we obviously need to keep an eye on Islam - but the real threat is the Jews."

Krisztina was about to get up. I managed to put a hand on her leg under the table and send her the look that, between partners who have been together for decades, means - wait.

Not because the sentence didn't deserve an answer - but because I wanted to know how deep the well was before I said anything. So I asked, as neutrally as I could -

"Ok. Well, some people do think that. Are there many around you who feel that way?"

"Yes, pretty much all my friends."

Krisztina tried again, by way of history - "But surely you know the history. They have always been persecuted - and during the war Hitler killed six million of them..."

She never got to finish the sentence.

"Well, they deserved it. They brought it on themselves."

The sun was shining. The plaice arrived.

I looked at Krisztina, and we understood each other without words - not here, not now.

We had driven to Skagen for the day's sake and for each other's, and there were families with children at every other table. You have to know when a conversation is a conversation - and when it is merely an occasion.

So we ate our food in peace, wished them a good day and walked out into the sun.

But the sentence came with us.
And it is still lying on the table between us.

A nice, normal, friendly young couple - and the sentence Europe has spent eighty years promising itself never to hear again, served over lunch, as if he were noting that the food needed salt.

What I want to tell you today is that this sentence was not a bolt from a clear sky. I had expected to hear it out in the open this year.

Because it is not one stray young man in Skagen. It is the surface of something that has grown larger than most people quite notice, beneath us, while we were looking away - and I can document it - as can many others here on this platform - because I, or we, have been standing in it all year.

Over the course of this year I have written a series of exhaustive texts and hundreds of long comments about Jews. About their three-thousand-year history, from Abraham through the exiles to the rebirth of the State of Israel. About their traditions, their scriptures, their way of carrying memory through the centuries.

About everything the Western world stands on without knowing it - that Man bears the image of God, that the law stands above the king, that conscience cannot be owned, that every child should be able to read - foundation stones that are all Hebrew, and which were carried out to us through a Jewish saviour and his Jewish apostles.

I have written about the causes of the persecution, its patterns and its costumes through a thousand years. About the grammar of Jew-hatred - the kind that cannot imagine a human being who freely holds an opinion, or a people that wants something of its own.

And about why it is crucial that the world stands up for and in front of this people - not because they are worth more than others, but because the attack on them has always been the first act in the attack on Man as such. MORE👇🏽

A while ago, I watched the infamous 47-minute video documenting the atrocities of October 7th — the one not made publicly available, to protect the privacy of the victims.

The worst part of this video is not what it displays, but who is displaying it: the perpetrators themselves. Gleefully. Sadistically. Unabashedly. Most of the footage was filmed by Hamas terrorists on their GoPro bodycams, some also by ordinary Gazan civilians on their cellphones.

Even the Nazis tried to cover up their atrocities, but Hamas brags about theirs for the entire world to see. The killers are euphoric throughout the massacre, and their relentless, ecstatic cries of "Allahu Akbar" (punctuated by the occasional "Kill the Jew!") are simply nauseating.

Some images are seared into my memory forever. I will never forget the two boys in their underwear — one with his eye socket hanging out of his face — asking his brother whether he thinks they're going to die, while the Hamas monster who had just thrown a grenade in their saferoom helps himself to a drink from their fridge, taking a casual break from the slaughter.

Or the throngs of Gazans crowding around pickup trucks loaded with the mutilated corpses of Jewish women, filming and spitting on the bodies. Or the woman in Kibbutz Mefalsim, crouching and begging in vain for mercy.

There is some evidence of sexual violence in the video — the charred corpse of a young woman with her legs splayed and her genitals exposed — but not much. Apparently even Hamas draws a line somewhere: they are not as proud of raping Jewish women as they are of murdering them. Or, more likely, they simply didn't want to embarrass the delicate sensibilities of their legions of useful idiots in the West.

But yes — there was rape. Not "rape" in scare quotes, as the apologists would have it, but sadistic, murderous sexual violence, documented in a new damning new report by The Civil Commission, an independent Israeli women's rights NGO. (video summary here: https://t.co/LTTjiO1s7E)

Across its 180 pages, the report describes "a recurring pattern of rape and gang rape; sexual torture; mutilation; targeted shooting to the face, head and genital area; forced nudity; binding and restraint; genital burning; objects inserted into intimate areas; post-mortem sexual humiliation; and execution during or after sexual assault."

And it was premeditated and organized. The terrorists crossing into Israel carried printed Arabic-to-Hebrew phrasebooks with handy expressions like "take off your pants," "lie down," "spread your legs," and "don't make trouble." I wonder why they expected to need those particular phrases?

I know one thing: no civilized country on earth would tolerate the existence of an organization like Hamas on its border after October 7th. Not one. This includes every self-righteous Westerner currently lecturing Israel from thousands of kilometres away, without an inch of skin in the game.
