@halvarflake I agree with you re:tooling, many tools are targeted purely towards CTF problems. As a (former) CTF organizer, I don't see challenges getting complex enough to match real software. Organizer time is generally donated and in short supply.
@whitequark Yeah, radare is a piece of shit. Each time I try it (about every year or so), I return back to IDA from about 10 years ago (the last version for which I have a license) because that's about 20 years advanced compared to it - cutter or no cutter..
