On Hats, Haircuts, and Tattoos

I think about decisions in three ways: hats, haircuts, and tattoos.

Most decisions are like hats. Try one and if you don't like it, put it back and try another. The cost of a mistake is low, so move quickly and try a bunch of hats.

Some decisions are like haircuts. You can fix a bad one, but it won't be quick and you might feel foolish for awhile. That said, don't be scared of a bad haircut. Trying something new is usually a risk worth taking. If it doesn't work out, by this time next year you will have moved on and so will everyone else.

A few decisions are like tattoos. Once you make them, you have to live with them. Some mistakes are irreversible. Maybe you’ll move on for a moment, but then you'll glance in the mirror and be reminded of that choice all over again. Even years later, the decision leaves a mark. When you're dealing with an irreversible choice, move slowly and think carefully.

This year I started teaching a few friends which has scaled to a community of thousands of coders. We developed various resources this year like the ACD Ladders, Hard75 bot, ACD bot, and most importantly the ACD discord server (which now has more than 7k members-making it the biggest active Indian CP server!), the best part is all these resources are for free! Thousands of coders use these resources on daily basis and have seen significant growth in their CP profiles, hundreds of students even got help in placements by these resources! The journey has been thrilling to say the least, I had never thought that we’d scale so much so quick and thanks a lot for all the support!

However I resigned from Microsoft in September this year and joined a startup! The work is amazing tbh however the lack of bandwidth now doesn’t allow me to contribute much to teaching, I am not that active as much as I was earlier! I would like to change this, I would again like to start contributing and start my own course! Obviously I’ll have to cut a bit on other fronts- I’m dropping my plans of getting into fitness and also won’t be able to continue my own CP journey and hence am quitting CP! Yes it’s gonna be detrimental for my personal and professional growth however I don’t see another way of being in a position to contribute again to the community without quitting it.

Although I am myself am a bit against courses but lately interacting with a a lot of new coders made me realise that beginners do rely heavily on the courses as spoon feeding often is helpful at that level, and you can’t expect everyone to read blogs and search for resources online. The course I am planning would span for 4-5 months and would cover basics of DSA/CP to an extend that should be sufficient to reach expert on Codeforces and should be enough for cracking your dream orgs! I don’t consider DSA/CP to be too different and hence I don’t see a point in ranting about it rather it’s best to club both and see amazing results! It would start most likely in Feb 2024, and this course would include me teaching via live sessions and doubt discussions, along with video and text resources.

Over the past few weeks I interacted with a lot of top Indian coders and tech professionals. 1 thing was clear that keeping these resources for free would attract a lot of people however free resources are mostly taken for granted. hence it won’t do any good! This is something I’ve witnessed in the beginning of this year too! I am left with 2 choices here:

1. Make it paid and I could donate all the money to some charity, so that people understand the value of the course they are purchasing and put in the required efforts. However, this would dent my plans of promoting free education.

2. Have a big enough student base so that a few students taking it for granted isn’t too demotivating for my team and me! This is where I feel I should be betting! Obviously it’s not something I can do, and would need help from you guys. I am aiming for 10k on twitter, youtube and discord, If we reach this mark by the end of the year (we still have a week to do this) then I promise to start and conclude everything I just mentioned! I know some people (mostly those who don’t know me) would feel that I am trying to gain subs or followers here, so just to mention- none of these platforms earn me a single penny all of them are free… even though we have thousands of coders using ACD Ladders daily still it’s ad free to improve user experience. Yes, the twitter account might generate some money in future, but I’ll not be keeping a single penny out of it and would rather utilize all the money for the community in terms of giveaways and for developing more helpful stuff

It’s not easy to keep promoting free education specially when ed-techs are willing to pay you huge amount of money to teach on their platforms or even just to promote their platforms but I understand the financial condition of several students in college who are barely able to pay their college fees, I would never ever feel morally correct if I ever ask them to pay even a single rupee also money doesn’t really matter much beyond a point and the satisfaction you get for truly helping others is un-parallel! hence I’ve always rejected such offers and promoted free resources! I am trying to do the same now, but this time I need your help! I am not gonna spend a single penny on advertisements since the course is also gonna be 100% free! hence it must be word of mouth! If any of the ACD resources or if even I in person have helped you in the smallest possible way to reach where you are today then I would request you to show some support and spread this message! Let’s see if we are able to reach 10k by the end of the year, links are attached below. I hope that we reach the desired numbers by the end of the year and I am able to contribute a lot more the next year! This is my way of contributing to the community, make sure you do your part in this!

I met @AliAbdaal for last weekend in London.

I have been following him for ~5 years; was part of his 1st PTYA cohort in Aug '20 and love his authentic content style.

However, what transpired in the 3.5+hrs we spent together, left me an even bigger fan.

5 things stood out:

1/ Curiosity
He asked questions.
A LOT of questions.
With no hesitation, no qualms, no second-guessing.

He was simply eager to know.

It is rare to find such authentic curiosity in today's times.

2/ Note-taking
I recall Ali blowing up in his early YT days with a video on note-taking.
Guess what? That hasn't changed one bit.

As he listened intently, he took notes.
Pages after pages.
With his lovely ink pen.
In a small cute notebook.

Rare to find such discipline to capture the finer points of life, as it happens to us.

3/ We are equal
Ali is 29, I am 43.
He has 5M+ YT subs, I have 3.5M
He is my teacher, I am his student.

We are different.
And when you meet someone different it is easy to either think of yourself as lesser or as superior.

Ali thought of me as an equal.
And I found that fascinating.

He offered advice as an equal, sought advice as an equal and exchanged ideas as an equal.

Rare to start one's first interaction as an equal.

4/ Range
We spoke about business, content creation, money, marriage, kids, working with one's spouse, work-life balance, purpose, taxes, investments.

It's incredible the range we covered.

While Ali is synonymous with productivity, he isn't defined by just that one thing.

Rare to see someone explore multiple identities in one life.

5/ No "me-too"
Consider this.
Your friend states that they saw a movie last night and loved it.
You have happened to seen the same movie sometime back.
What are the odds your first reaction will be "Me-too. I have seen the movie as well"?
I'd say 99%!

That's what we do.
When we have done the same thing, we instantly announce it.
But what that does is assumes we have had the same experience as well.

Not even once during the entire 3.5hrs did I hear Ali utter the words "we have done that too", or "I have felt that too", or "me-too".

I am sure most of what I shared is something he has done as well.
But he didn't care about what he had done.
He cared about what I had learnt from what I had done.

Rare to see this pure chase for learning.

Ali stated that his lifelong purpose is to be a teacher.

And I'd argue he will become one of the world's top teachers, since he is one of the best students I have ever interacted with.

These 5 elements are not for just one person to own.
Anyone can own them.
YOU can own them.

The surest way to plan for the future is not to predict it.
It is to remain a student, forever!

Ali is a terrific example of that.

One of the best advice my IIT roommate gave me was, “when your life isn’t going up hill, make sure it doesn’t go downhill. Atleast try to stay where you’re at by doing minimal things”

If the curve of life isn’t going up, just make sure it stays flat, right where you’re and doesn’t go downhill.

This is something which has helped me a lot. We always expect life to go uphill and try for it, but sometimes things aren’t in our control.

In those moments it’s important to hold your ground and not go downhill.

In all my years living in the West, holiday season was long and extended. Christmas time off started after the 15th of December and continued through the New Year. In China, Chinese New Year has a long holiday.

Unfortunately in India, Diwali holidays are usually 1 or 2 days in corporate offices. In years like this one when Diwali falls on a weekend, there is one day off. Many of us travel to be with families across the country, sometimes far and wide.

While we can take the days off, is there a care for a longer festive break, maybe a week long one, as a country, so we can enjoy the festive season and family time without counting days?

I was recently struck by a realization:

The people I read books about are very rarely the people I would ever want to trade lives with.

Why?

The price of their success was not one I would be willing to pay.

There is a price tag for anything you want to achieve in life.

Every single thing you want is an output that requires certain inputs to buy or earn.

Importantly, there's a "List Price" and a "Real Price":

• The List Price is the actual, direct price to pay for the thing you want (effort, time, energy, etc.).

• The Real Price is the List Price plus the indirect price in the form of the tradeoffs and opportunity cost of the pursuit.

Using the example of John D. Rockefeller, the List Price for his success was the countless years of 24/7 hard work and focus, but the Real Price also included the loving relationships lost, the physical and mental health deterioration from the nonstop schedule, and the reputation damage of some of his business practices.
There's the List Price you see, and the Real Price you don't.

Before you go after anything, make sure you know both.

What I've learned: There are many things in life that look like a great deal based on the List Price, but a ripoff based on the Real Price.

Three questions we all need to ask ourselves:

1. What is the List Price of the thing you want?

2. What is the Real Price of the thing you want?

3. Are you willing to pay that Real Price?

For me, thinking clearly about the List Price and the Real Price of the things I want has helped create a balanced existence.

I spent most of my life thinking that I wanted to build something enormous, be extraordinarily rich or famous, and have some large buildings named after me.

But while the world certainly needs some people to continue thinking like that, as I've matured, I've realized that the Real Price of those things is not one that I'm willing to pay (at least not for now).

It would almost certainly mean giving up these 1pm Wednesday pool days with my son—and I'm just not willing to do that.
In a different season of my life, perhaps I will reconsider my view on the Real Price, but for now, I'm thrilled to enjoy my pool days and leave the building of something enormous to one of my amazingly ambitious followers!
