🪙 How Are Tokens Created? — Understanding Token Contracts & Minting

Yesterday, we learned about ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 — the standards that define how different types of tokens behave on Ethereum.

But that brings us to another question:

> If tokens are created through smart contracts, how does that actually happen?

The answer starts with minting.

🪙 What Is Minting?

Minting is the process of creating new tokens and adding them to the token's total supply.

For an ERC-20 token, the smart contract keeps track of things like:

Total supply

Each address's balance

Transfers

Approvals

The token contract's rules determine who can mint, how many tokens can be created, and under what conditions.

⚙️ So how does it work?

Imagine a developer creates a token called:

HUSTLER ($HSLR)

They write an ERC-20 smart contract that defines:

Name: Hustler
Symbol: HSLR
Supply: 1,000,000 tokens

The contract can then create that supply according to its programmed rules.

The basic flow looks like:

Developer writes contract
⬇️
Contract defines token rules
⬇️
Contract is deployed
⬇️
Tokens are minted
⬇️
Balances are recorded on-chain

🔥 But here's the important part:

Not every token has to have a fixed supply.

A token can be designed so that:

Fixed supply → No more tokens can be minted

or

Mintable supply → New tokens can be created when authorized conditions are met.

For example, a project might allow only a specific admin, governance system, or smart contract mechanism to mint additional tokens.

So when you see:

> "This token has a 1 billion supply."

You shouldn't immediately assume that 1 billion is the maximum that can ever exist.

You need to understand the token contract's rules.

🧠 Minting vs Transfer

This distinction is important.

Minting:

New tokens are created.

Transfer:

Existing tokens move from one address to another.

For example:

Mint 1,000 HSLR
→ Total supply increases by 1,000.

But:

Alice → Bob: 100 HSLR
→ No new tokens are created.
→ 100 tokens simply move from Alice's balance to Bob's.

Ethereum's ERC-20 implementation separates token creation from ordinary transfers; _mint increases total supply and the recipient's balance, while _transfer moves existing tokens.

🔥 And there is the opposite of minting:

Burning.

Burning removes tokens from circulation according to the token contract's rules and normally decreases the token's total supply.

So remember:

Mint → Create tokens 🪙

Transfer → Move tokens 🔄

Burn → Remove tokens 🔥

These three concepts will become extremely important when we start talking about tokenomics and on-chain analysis.

📌 Key takeaway:

Tokens on Ethereum are typically managed by smart contracts. Minting creates new tokens and increases supply, while transfers move existing tokens between addresses. Whether a token can mint more supply depends on the rules programmed into its contract.

A few months ago, I noticed something strange about X.

Two people could talk about the exact same topic.

One had 50K followers.
The other had 2K.

The first gets thousands of likes.
The second barely gets noticed.

But when I read both posts, the smaller account had actually done more work.

They researched the topic.
Added their own ideas.
Explained it clearly.
And taught me something new.

The bigger account simply repeated what everyone else was saying.

That made me realize:
Attention and value are not the same thing.

We see this in everyday life too.

1. A popular restaurant isn't automatically the best restaurant.

2.A mechanic with the biggest garage isn't automatically the best mechanic.

3. A teacher with thousands of followers isn't automatically the best teacher.

4. A famous fashion brand may have massive visibility, while a local tailor with fewer customers produces better-fitting clothes and earns loyal customers through quality.

Visibility gets attention; quality builds reputation.

Sometimes the person with fewer customers, fewer students or less attention is the one doing the best work.

The problem is that the internet has always been better at measuring attention than contribution.

And AI is making this problem bigger.

If anyone can create 100 posts, articles or videos in minutes, we'll have more content than ever.

But how do we know what's actually useful?

“Who is getting the most attention?”

It's about getting closer to:
“Who is actually contributing something valuable?”

That means looking beyond raw visibility and thinking about things like quality, originality, reputation and consistency.
