@VitoComedy hundreds of thousands of bill-boarded sprites, im not sure how feasible that is. there are ways to maybe trick it with LOD levels and fudge things in the distance. probably a mix of the two. as somone else in the comments mentioned, people have been rescaling sprites since doom.
