1978, U.S. navy vet and SF city supervisor Harvey Milk was assassinated in city hall. Congress has offered no official remembrance. In 2016, the Navy honored him with USNS Harvey Milk and in 2025 a new republican defense secretary and senate fought to remove the memorial.
