I am no longer impressed by where you stand cos I've seen where you kneel.

[Sir J (J9) @SirJarus]

I stopped at a canteen to have some amala in Offa few days ago and a guy approached me.

I'm used to being approached everywhere and most times I even interject with "From social media abi?" once a stranger walks towards me in such manner.

"Sir, I know you? I was a student of the University of Offa and, last year, you came to our school to talk to us on career and encouraged us", the young man started.

He was wearing what appeared to be commercial okada rider jacket.

A few seconds of confusion. Do I have Twitter followers riding okada? This guy looks too polished to be an okada rider.

"I brought someone here", he added.

This looks like someone I need to have deeper discussion with so I gave him my Whatsapp number as I felt he was at the mercy of the passenger he brought.

Not in a hurry as I had thought as I still saw him after I settled at my table, so I asked him to grab a chair and let us talk the talk immediately rather than on Whatsapp later.

His story goes: He was an accounting student, and was encouraged by the career talk I had given last year and he had enrolled for ICAN ATS, passed stage 1 and expecting result of stage 2 he wrote recently. ICAN has 5-6 stages for ATS route (non-graduate route).

"So what happened? Were you rusticated?", I quipped, with each morsel of amala becoming heavier in my hand.

Then series of bombshells: He had lost both parents. He had been fending for himself almost all his life. He is in his mid 20s. He came to Offa from a nearby village five years ago, for NCE. He got admission into UniOffa as DE to 200L. He spent nights working at a poultry and days a student.

More bombshells: He dropped out in 300L when he could not afford school fees. He could not raise the school fees when he resumed 300L. The poultry work was stressful too. So he started doing okada.

More: His CGPA at the end of 200L was 4.0/5.0. A solid CGPA.

UniOffa school fee is less than N400k, one of the cheapest private universities in Nigeria.

ICAN is cheaper (less than N100k per diet?) but I told him immediately that that ICAN will be useless without a degree. He has to go back to school and complete the degree. Serious employer looks at your degree before your professional cert.

I'm on the Governing Council of the school (he didn't know - a surprise - and he probably thought I was just brought as an external speaker at that career event. And I didn't tell him.) I asked him to go back to the school and enquire whether he can resume the 300L that just started (his set are in 400L now but that shouldn't matter).

I have seen people struggle in life. Not the worst experience, but my mind kept flashing back. Someone is dropping out of school, from a brilliant 4-pointer accounting student to an okada rider because, all his life, he couldn't raise sub N400k. An amount some guys spend on a random night at a tier 3 club.

Touching.

Joe will finish that degree. In shaa Allah.

You can pick 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 0.9, in fact, you have infinite options. You are just too lazy to explore those options, and the power that be in your bubble love that for you.

Blasphemy has to be the greatest example of humans' inhumanity to humans. A crime where the victim does not exist in reality but in the imaginations of those who wield state power as a show of force and an avenue to silence criticism & rebellion.
This is pathetic and sad.

The commission of sexual intercourse within the precincts of any mosque is a grave violation of the sanctity of the house of Allah. To do so within the precincts of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, the holiest site in Islam, compounds the offence with a direct desecration of the most sacred space of the Ummah. Such an act is not merely a private moral failing; it is a public affront to the reverence due to the Ḥaram and to the faith itself.

Under the Sharīʿah, zinā is a capital offence. When the conditions of proof and the personal status of the offender are established, the prescribed penalty is severe, reflecting the offence’s impact on lineage, social order, and public morality. When the same act is committed within the Ḥaram, it unites the crime of zinā with the violation of the inviolability of the Sacred Mosque. This dual character elevates the offence beyond ordinary zinā and places it within the domain of crimes that simultaneously breach the rights of Allah and the collective sanctity of the Muslim community.

The application of capital punishment in this case by the competent judicial authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rests on two concurrent foundations: the law of the land, which is grounded in the Sharīʿah, and the jurisdictional competence of those authorities over offences committed within the Ḥaram. Where the procedural requirements of the Sharīʿah have been observed and the classification of the offence as capital has been made by the relevant jurists, the resulting sentence constitutes the administration of justice according to the governing legal order of the place of the offence. In such circumstances, the objectives of deterrence, public protection, and the preservation of the sanctity of the Ḥaram are pursued within the framework of the law itself.

Public controversy surrounding the enforcement of a ḥadd penalty is neither new nor unexpected. Over time, however, sustained legal and moral evaluation tends to return attention to the nature of the offence, the sanctity of the location, and the authority under which the judgment was rendered. When these elements are clear, the temporary noise surrounding the case ordinarily subsides, leaving the legal and ethical reasoning of the decision to stand on its own terms.

Your criticism reinforces a fundamentalist's convictions of their position. They see your objections as biases and close mindedness. You are helping them stay grounded in their convictions, while you go home feeling high that you 'spoke sense into that idiot's brain'.

I passionately hate what this brand of christianity has done to the religion.
Unfortunately, it's bound to happen and it will keep growing because it is now the face of christianity. People may want to live in delusion, thinking it's not true, but reality says otherwise.

[Ajagajígì-ògùn @RO_Ogunjimi]

I would have taken you seriously if not for how you deceptively detached your faith from the judgement. You kept using "their" towards the end of your tweet, meaning, you find the judgment repulsive, but the installed virus kept overriding your capacity to 'feel'.

[A.Y.O @YusufAsunmogejo]

But AYO, don’t you think the punishment is extreme? Truly, your concerns are valid.

But I want you to know that the word “extreme” is a relative term. It is not absolute. And you cannot define what is extreme until you establish the baseline you are measuring from.

The reason you keep saying it is extreme is because you are using a Western ruler to measure an Islamic legal system.

In the secular framework, the highest possible value is individual liberty and physical life. That is, liberty and life comes before the religion. From that baseline, taking a human life for a non violent sexual act is viewed as an extreme punishment. They believe that if there is no physical victim, the state has no business ending a life.

However, in the Islamic legal compass, the highest priority is the protection and sanctity of the religion. Our servitude to the Almighty comes first, even before our own life. Islam believes we are not here on our own. We are here on a purpose, which is to worship the Almighty.

Now when you compare these two worldviews, you will see the glaring difference in the moral compasses and why you feel the judgment is extreme.

From the Islamic standpoint, it is the crime itself that is extreme. Read that again. This is because bypassing private hotel rooms to commit an act of severe sexual immorality right inside the most guarded sanctuary on earth is an extreme violation. It is an unthinkable level of spiritual treason.

So, when an offender commits an extreme violation of a state ultimate sacred boundary, a competent court will mostly likely respond with the maximum deterrent.

You only think the punishment is extreme because your secular moral compass refuses to accept the weight of the crime. When you understand the hierarchy of laws that I established above, you will realize the ruling based on their framework, is not extreme. It is proportional.

This is the difference. You don’t agree. Fine. But that’s their legal view point. And do you think it is also fair to impose your own emotions on their jurisdiction?

[Ajagajígì-ògùn @RO_Ogunjimi]

Same can be said about the military. It's why evangelicals thrive well around cities and towns with military bases in most states in the south here. I often jokingly call it, 'the big daddy syndrome'. Humans will always humans, we can't help it.

[Sai Ishaya @Sai_Ishaya_]

There isn't enough data to show that medical students or doctors are more susceptible to cults, but there's enough to show that intelligence doesn't protect against them. In fact, sometimes it has the opposite effect.

From my own experience, three things happen in medical school: most people stay the same, while others diverge into two extremes. One becomes very religious, while the other often goes from being very religious to being an atheist.

The closest example I can think of is Japan's Aum Shinrikyo from the 1990s, which notoriously recruited elite doctors and medical students. You will find a lot more examples in Southeast Asia.

The cult systematically integrated them into its horrific chemical and biological warfare programs. It established its own pseudo-government, including its own "ministry of health", which was led by a highly respected US-trained cardiovascular surgeon 😀

They had their own underground medical experimentation lab where they did all sorts of things on dissident members. Still, the worst of it was when they travelled to Zaire under the guise of medical aid to get samples of the Ebola virus to use as a biological weapon.

The enquiries and reviews that followed taught many lessons. Still, the common thread was that many med students/Drs were socially isolated, thrown into a rigorous academic environment very early on, and naive and vulnerable.

Medical training also conditions students to defer to absolute authority, endure extreme sleep deprivation, & accept intense self-sacrifice. B/c they were already habituated to a high-control environment, transitioning into a totalitarian cult felt dangerously familiar, almost natural.
