Disappointing to see #Bangladesh #Army parroting the talking point of the Interim Govt. as regards downplaying the recent (and still ongoing) communal #violence against the religious #minorities since the fall of the Sh. Hasina Govt. This is what the army spokesperson had to say:

"We hear minorities, minorities. That they are being often attacked, that they are being repressed. I can say this: the amount of protection minorities get in Bangladesh, I doubt whether minorities get in any other country in the world. Here, Madrassa students protect temples. This is an example. If you can show a similar example anywhere else in the world, I would be happy to know".

Our response: We have posted on the attacks on religious minorities incl. #Hindus, #Ahmadiyyas, #Sufis, and others in detail since Aug 5. So will not repeat those here.

However, just to point out the irony of the army spox's words, the fact that #Madrassa students have to "protect" #temples from being attacked is itself evidence that Hindus and other minorities are NOT safe. They are under attack and need to be guarded.

In any event, the army's own role in protecting key state properties, industries, religious minorities, and political opposition in the wake of the August 5 changeover itself is quite dubious. But that is a topic for another post.

Shockingly insensitive comments by @ChiefAdviserGoB Dr. Md. #Yunus on attacks on religious minorities, esp. the #Hindus, following the fall of the #SheikhHasina Govt. in #Bangladesh. In an interview with the @PTI_News, the head of the Interim Government, among others, remarked-

“These attacks are political in nature and not communal…“Now, while beating up Awami League cadres, they had beaten up Hindus as there is a perception that Hindus in Bangladesh mean Awami League supporters...So, there is no clear distinction between Awami League supporters and Hindus”.

Our response: What is political can also be communal. They are not mutually exclusive. This is not the first time that #Hindus have come under attack in Bangladesh following change of power. The 2001 attacks, perpetrated by the same groups as 2024, are still etched in our memory.

Hindus are attacked because they are Hindus and also because they are perceived as being supportive of the country’s main secular political force. Does not make one iota of difference to the communal nature of the attacks.

To think the above tone-deaf words came out of the mouth of a Nobel Peace Laureate! Frankly, quite shameful how a head of govt. can justify communal attacks against his own people by political rationalisation. Esp. when his admin is yet to take any action against these crimes.

Dr. Yunus also said, “Even when I met members of the Hindu community, I had requested them: please don't identify yourselves as Hindus; rather, you should say you are citizens of this country and you have equal rights. If someone tries to snatch your legal rights as citizens, then there are remedies”

Our response: Hindus should be able to identify as Hindus and as citizens of Bangladesh. It should not be either or. Does the Chief Adviser have the same demand from the Muslims of Bangladesh? That they should not identify as Muslims but as citizens of Bangladesh? He should try and see the political consequences. This subtle attempt to deny people their deeply-held beliefs and identity is akin to white supremacists in the U.S. shouting #AllLivesMatter when Black Americans say #BlackLivesMatter.

Finally, Dr. Yunus said, “The issue of trying to portray the conditions of minorities by #India in such a big way is just an excuse”.

If the Chief Adviser had actually bothered to follow the media reports, reports from rights orgs and the massive protests by the minorities protesting the violence against them since Aug 5, he would have known that news of the violence was not “exaggerated”. Yes, there were some disinformation and misinformation, and they have been thoroughly rebutted. But to actually dismiss the attacks as a minor issue portrayed in a “big way” by India is evading responsibility for the failure of the interim govt, and the Chief Adviser himself, to safeguard the country’s largest religious minority group. Here’s why:

- Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council documented 205 attacks on religious minorities between August 5 and 10.

- Human Rights Support Society documented attacks on at least 65 members of minority communities in August, which left 61 injured. 228 Hindu homes, 240 businesses, and 15 temples were attacked in Natore, Dhamrai, Dinajpur, Patuakhali, Shariatpur, Faridpur, Jashore, Noakhali, Meherpur, Chandpur and Khulna.

Is the Chief Adviser even aware that the #Ahmadiyyas were attacked too, in Panchagarh and Rangpur? Or that at least two Sufi Shrines in Sirajganj have been vandalised by Islamist mobs? Or that a 15 year old Hindu boy named Utshab Mandal was almost beaten to death (still in critical condition) by a Muslim mob yesterday on the “charge” of insulting the Prophet while he was in the custody of the police and army?

ISPR, the #press arm of #Bangladesh’s armed forces, in a statement said that Utshab Mandal, almost beaten to death yesterday by a #Muslim mob for the alleged “crime” of insulting the Prophet Muhammad, will face criminal charges after recovery for hurting religious sentiments.

The statement however, says nothing about bringing to book the criminals who almost beat a 15 year-old #Hindu boy to death after snatching him away from the custody of the law enforcement and security officials.

This is despite there being clear videos of people who participated in the lethal assault on Utshab. In fact, at least one Islamist clearly announces (in front of the army) that he himself struck the victim. And despite there being tell-tale social media posts which shows who instigated the attack.
